On Day 2, the final day of the Gatefield Health Summit 2024, we issued a clear call to action on addressing non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Nigeria. This call emphasized the urgent need for systemic reforms in the healthcare landscape, urging the government to establish a diabetes drug subsidy fund, financed through taxes on sugar-sweetened beverages. The day began with the screening of "The Quiet Epidemic: Diabetes in Nigeria," which exposed the unbearable costs of managing NCDs like diabetes. Testimonies from patients and advocates, including former President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo, highlighted the importance of early detection, proper management, and lifestyle changes for effectively managing the condition. We also presented a study titled “Impact of Inflation on Affordability and Adherence to Anti-diabetics,” which revealed a troubling rise in the annual cost of diabetes management to over one million naira in 2024—nearly double that of the previous year—equating to almost 700% of the annual income for Nigeria's most vulnerable citizens. Other key sessions included: - PHC Systems as a Frontier for NCD Prevention, where experts discussed the importance of supply chain management and the need for well-trained healthcare workers capable of managing chronic NCDs like diabetes. - A Special Presentation on the Impact of Air Quality on Health. - Case Studies on South Africa’s Health Promotion Levy, empowering advocates with insights from successful campaigns. The day ended on a high note with a musical performances, leaving us all energized and inspired for the future. A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to today’s success. Stay tuned for more insights and highlights from the summit! #GatefieldHealthSummit #Beyond65
