Today we are excited to share that at Intron Health has raised $1.6M in pre-seed funding to revolutionise clinical speech recognition in developing countries, starting in Africa! This round was led by Microtraction with incredible support from Plug and Play Tech Center, Jaza Rift, Octopus Ventures, Africa Health Ventures, Openseed VC, Pi Campus, Alumni Angel, and BakerBridge Capital. We are so grateful to angel investors from Google, CLEAR Global, New York University, Assembly Investors, and Optum. We started out striving to digitise healthcare and streamline data entry. Our speech recognition platform, with an impressive 92% accuracy rate, has made a significant difference for doctors in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, and Uganda by reducing documentation time by sevenfold. We are honoured to serve over 30 hospitals and improve care for more than 56,000 patients. With a robust dataset of over 3.5 million audio clips from 18k+ contributors in 29 countries, we've been able to train our algorithms for effective deployment across various regions. Our collaborations with Google Research, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Digital Square at PATH, alongside partners like NVIDIA and Hugging Face, are pushing the boundaries of what's possible. As we celebrate this milestone, we remain committed to harnessing the power of localised voice technology to revolutionise healthcare and explore new applications across different sectors. I was an intern only a few years ago struggling to find my first tech job in SF. One interviewer honestly said I was “overqualified” —an MD with a Master’s degree applying for roles designed for college students. Fast forward a few years and I’m super proud to have graduated 3 rockstar interns over the past 2 years into prestigious PhD programs in the US and Europe. From unlikely backgrounds, over/underqualified, but incredibly passionate and intelligent, they became meaningful global contributors to cutting-edge technology during their time at Intron Health. Mohammed a rockstar from Sudan, now a CS PhD at Dublin City University braved a volatile political climate, sanctions, and several limitations in his home country, but helped build some of our very first production-ready speech recognition and language models. Joanne is from Nigeria, now in her Biomedical Informatics PhD at BME - University of Cincinnati. Joanne and I have a lot in common— the only other doctor I know with 3D animation experience out of medical school. She’s a researcher, a coder, a problem solver, and an artist— basically a clone of me in many ways. She’s an absolute genius. She led data quality and data operations and helped scale our clinical speech data collection from one to 6 countries. Abraham, a true rockstar from Nigeria, now heading to The Ohio State University for his CS PhD. Not many ML enthusiasts have the courage to edit the underlying code/algorithm for a speech recognition model. We bypassed our usual interview process to hire him and he’s grown into an ML powerhouse with a breath of practical ML expertise that very few can match. We’re super proud to contribute something useful on their journeys and we appreciate the time they invested at Intron. I am truly grateful!
