Will climate change get to me? As global temperatures rise, so do the risks of Vibrio vulnificus—a potentially deadly bacterium found in warm coastal waters. This pathogen can cause severe wound infections and life-threatening septicemia, particularly in people with weakened immune systems. Who is at risk? 1. Individuals with liver disease, diabetes, or weakened immunity. 2. Those with open wounds exposed to seawater or raw seafood. 3. People who consume raw or undercooked shellfish. How do I stay safe? 1. Avoid swimming with open wounds in warm coastal waters (even though you want to enjoy your holiday to the fullest!) 2. Wear protective gloves when handling raw seafood (better safe than sorry). 3. Cook shellfish thoroughly before eating. 4. Seek immediate medical attention if you develop redness, swelling, or fever after exposure.
