  • To the people of Mbiabet Esieyere and Mbiabet Udouba in Nigeria’s deep south, sundown would mean children doing their homework by the glow of kerosene lamps, and the faint thrum of generators emanating from homes that could afford to run them. Like many rural communities, these two villages of fishermen and farmers in the community of Mbiabet, tucked away in clearings within a dense palm forest, had never been connected to the country’s national electricity grid.... Until something incredible happened!! To read about the turnaround in the Mbiabet community, click the link below: https://lnkd.in/dn7ezck6 Written by Knowable Magazine

Among refugees, internally displaced persons, and asylum seekers uprooted by conflict, violence, or disaster, 9 out of every 10 people live without access to energy. This year, at United Nations OCHA's Humanitarian Networks and Partnerships Week 2025, we're hosting 'Clean Energy Access for Crisis Affected Communities' alongside innovation partners at United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), Innovation Norway, Response Innovation Lab, NORCAP - part of the Norwegian Refugee Council, UNICEF Innovation, IOM - UN Migration. Collectively, we're bringing together humanitarian actors, donors, investors, and private sector representatives working to chart a path forward. Innovators in Creating Hope in Conflict: a Humanitarian Grand Challenge's community enabling access to clean, reliable energy--often by spearheading innovative financing mechanisms--will join us to share learnings from their projects and consider critical questions: What makes a initiative's model viable in crisis settings? Which financing mechanisms have the greatest potential to drive scale? And how can humanitarian and development partners provide catalytic funding and technical support to bridge existing gaps? • How Solar Mini-Grids Are Transforming Rural Regions in Nigeria Across rural Nigeria, access to reliable electricity has long been a challenge. Families and businesses have depended on expensive, polluting alternatives like kerosene lamps, generators, and firewood. But a quiet revolution is unfolding—one powered by the sun. Solar mini-grids are lighting up villages, driving economic growth, and improving daily life. Solar Mini-Grids: A Game Changer Mini-grids are small, independent power systems that generate and distribute electricity within a community. Unlike the national grid, which struggles to reach remote areas, solar mini-grids provide a practical and sustainable solution. In Cross River State’s Assiga Agro-Hub, Prado Power partnered with the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) to deploy a solar mini-grid that now powers homes, farms, and businesses. With steady electricity, small-scale farmers can process crops efficiently, shop owners can extend their working hours, and students can study at night. Similarly, in Mbiabet Ikot Esieyere, Akwa Ibom State, Prado Power collaborated with Rocky Mountain Institute Africa to establish a 20kW solar mini-grid, bringing power to over 180 households. Now, businesses flourish, healthcare facilities operate more effectively, and families no longer have to rely on costly alternatives. The Power of Partnerships Scaling renewable energy in rural Nigeria requires collaboration. Solar mini-grids succeed when governments, private investors, and local communities work together. Government Support: Initiatives like the REA’s Nigeria Electrification Project provide funding and policies that encourage private-sector participation. Private Sector Investment: Companies like Prado Power invest in solar technology, ensuring efficient implementation and long-term sustainability. Community Engagement: Educating residents on the benefits of solar power and offering affordable payment plans ensures lasting adoption. The impact of solar mini-grids goes far beyond lighting homes It extends across various sectors such as: Education: Schools can power computers, extend learning hours, and improve the quality of education. Healthcare: Clinics can store vaccines safely, operate medical equipment, and provide better services. Business Growth: Entrepreneurs can expand their operations, reducing losses from unreliable power. Women’s Empowerment: With stable electricity, women spend less time sourcing firewood and more time on productive activities. The Future of Solar in Nigeria As Nigeria’s energy needs grow, solar mini-grids offer a cost-effective, scalable, and sustainable solution. However expanding their reach requires continued investment, supportive policies, and technological innovation. At Prado Power, we are committed to powering progress. With more strategic partnerships and groundbreaking projects ahead, we are lighting up communities—one mini-grid at a time. The future of energy is here, and it’s powered by the sun!

  • The 2025 International Women’s Day (IWD) theme, “Accelerating Action,” is more than just a call to arms, it’s a commitment to driving real, measurable change. At Prado Power, we don’t just celebrate women; we empower, uplift, and create opportunities for them to lead in the renewable energy sector and beyond.
