Happy World Atopic Eczema Day 2024! September 14 marked World Atopic Eczema Day, and we were out in the community, raising awareness and educating others. Yet no amount of preparation could have prepared us for what we experienced. Skin health has been overlooked and underestimated for far too long. This was a deeply enlightening experience for me personally. What many of us have believed for years to be eczema was not what we thought. Decades of misconceptions—such as the belief that eczema is contagious—still persist in our communities. The need for education is urgent. Our goal was simple: to shed light on atopic eczema, to inform, to educate, and to break down the stigma. But what we encountered was far more impactful. The sheer number of people seeking free consultations and medication was staggering. Almost everyone we met had some form of skin issue, yet fewer than 2% had ever seen a dermatologist. Most relied on unverified skincare vendors, market remedies, or self-medication from local chemists—desperate for relief but trapped in a cycle of misinformation. We heard repeatedly, "Eczema is contagious." Even with our informational leaflets, many found it difficult to let go of long-held beliefs. It’s hard to unlearn, especially when misconceptions have been passed down through generations. But now, more than ever, we need to change the narrative. Here's a sneak peek into how it went... https://lnkd.in/dFu3j5d4 Eczema isn’t just a skin condition—it’s a daily struggle. Those living with it face both physical and emotional challenges. It’s time we step up, show empathy, and offer real support. Join us in this urgent mission to raise awareness, combat stigma, and create a community that truly supports those with eczema and other skin conditions. Together, we can make skin health a priority. #atopiceczemaunfiltered #atopiceczemaawareness #atopicezcemaday2024 #atopiceczemaday #atopiceczemadayinnigeria

Vitiligo Warriors, We Got This! New Research Published! As a person living with vitiligo, I know firsthand the challenges it presents. Thrilled and a little vulnerable this published research in the Journal of Health Psychology! This study delves into the lived experience of Vitiligo in Nigeria. It wasn't just research, it was a journey of collaboration with Prof Andrew R Thompson, Dr. Nick Taylor (CEO, Unmind), and Dr. Vasilis S. Vasiliou, and our amazing founder Ogo Maduewesi A Patient Leader and founder of the Vitiligo Support and Awareness Foundation (VITSAF), it meant the world to be involved. I was able to connect participants, facilitate discussions with dermatologists, and contribute my own perspective to the incredible work that's now published: link to study - https://lnkd.in/eUKVgGhF This research is for all the Vitiligo warriors out there!
