Last week, we participated in the 3rd National Cocoa Festival in Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria. The festival organized by the Cocoa Farmers Association of Nigeria (CFAN) was a captivating event featuring a range of activities, including keynote speeches, panel discussions, and valuable networking opportunities for experts, thought leaders, and stakeholders in the Nigerian cocoa industry. Sunbeth Global Concepts was well represented at the festival, with two of our delegates participating in panel sessions and engaging in insightful discussions on the latest developments within the cocoa sector. While participating in one of the panel sessions, our representative, Modupe Ojo, spoke to pressing matters in EUDR compliance, and how we are working with farmers to fulfil traceability requirements and get them to fully embrace sustainable cocoa production practices. Similarly, our second panelist, Ibraheem Ganiyu (FCA, ACTI), spoke on the planned implementation of the cocoa board in Nigeria, stating that it is a significant initiative that will be best situated with the Ministry of Trade and Commerce, which has consistently demonstrated its vested interest in Nigeria’s non-oil exports. We also seized the opportunity to connect with other key players across the value chain. This event also presented a remarkable platform for Sunbeth to showcase its commitment to contributing tangibly to the Nigerian cocoa industry. Did you know that investing in rural women could boost agricultural output by up to 4%?   According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), women farmers are just as efficient as male farmers but they produce less because they control less land, use fewer inputs and have less access to important services. Granting women equal access to productive resources and services would unlock their productivity potential and could increase output substantially.   At Sunbeth, we recognize the importance of empowering women beyond agriculture so they can fully exercise their ingenuity and make more tangible impacts in their communities. Last week, we successfully hosted a farmers' training program themed "Assess and Address", an initiative aimed at fostering sustainable practices and driving positive change in the cocoa supply chain. The program featured insightful discussions from industry experts on relevant topics such as: 1. Mitigating Child Labour Issues in the Cocoa Supply Chain, led by Mr. Ayoola Olasoji, proprietor of SpringBoard Academy, Akure.  2. Gender Diversity and Its Challenges in the Cocoa Supply Chain, presented by Bar. Catherine Ogunjebi. Our "Assess and Address" program is aligned with the Rainforest Alliance's mission to promote ethical and sustainable farming practices. By equipping our farmers with knowledge and resources, we are contributing to the creation of a responsible cocoa supply chain that respects both people and the environment.
