The Waste Museum

One project I was glad to be a part of during my 6-month internship this year at The Waste Museum was the construction of a Gazebo at the Department of Theatre Arts at the University of Ibadan. The Waste Museum team had been invited to coordinate the construction of the gazebo project. The plastic bottles used for the construction of the gazebo were used for the decoration of the stage used for a stage play titled "Mammy Waters Wedding" to commemorate the World Environment Day 2024 🌎 Mammy Water's Wedding was a stage play that was done to emphasise the importance of the relationship of man with his environment in this case the water bodies. Instead of throwing the plastic bottles away after the stage play they decided to use them in the construction of a gazebo there at their department. We used more than 2,500 plastic bottles to construct the gazebo. It was a beautiful experience working on the gazebo and it reemphasises the importance of teamwork and collaborative efforts in combating the issues of climate change. The construction of the gazebo using plastic bottles helps to instil the consciousness in the minds of people that the waste we generate is a valuable resource that we can always explore. Just like my boss Mrs Adejumoke Olowookere will always say "Waste is not waste until you waste it." Together let's join hands to build a sustainable planet for you and me. A visit to The Waste Museum in Ibadan was an eye-opening experience! Witnessing how Jumoke Olowookere has been creative in transforming waste into beautiful and functional objects has truly inspired me to embrace a more sustainable lifestyle. From the stunning costumes we tried on to the countless health benefits of the plants showcased, to our interactions with different animals and human at the waste museum. In 2019, a dream took root in my mind—a vision of a Circular Economy Showcase center that would redefine our relationship with waste and pave the way for a sustainable future. Little did I know that this dream would blossom into The Waste Museum, a testament to perseverance and passion. After tireless dedication, the dream became a reality in February 2022, thanks to the support of the US Consulate in Nigeria through the USADF. From being the first Waste Museum on the African continent to welcoming over 8,500 individuals in just 27 months. With the UN Industrial Development Organization Report which stated that 0.51kg of wastes is generated by each Nigeria citizen, a part of the yearly 32 million tonnes from the country which is estimated to reach 107 million tonnes by 2050 if left unchecked. The Waste Museum became the pace setter that a sustainable world without wastes is possible, when we look at waste as an untapped resources. Our climate education, campaigns and outreaches have contributed to the circular economy movement through; ✅ Training of over 4600 community kids through our #Waste4Skills Creative Summer Camp. ✅ Collection of 10 tonnes of plastic bottle wastes from the Moniya area in the last 3 years through cleanups and wastes for gifts. ✅ Conversion of 3,000 tyre wastes into Ottoman furnitures for indoor and outdoor decorations in the last 5 years. ✅ Upcycling of 8,000 tyre wastes into kid’s playground in the last 5 years. ✅ Currently has a working staff strength of 15 with 85% women and over 70 Volunteers. ✅ Trained 4,500 individuals (98% women) on sustainable organic backyard garden to grow their own food and herbs without chemical ✅ Reached 100 million indirect citizens through radio, television and other public events. ✅ Reached 50,000 direct public members through our Trashion fashion shows in communities and Markets. ✅ Signed an MOU with International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA), a member of the international CIGAR group to promote Sustainability and Green Economy ✅ Partnership with 4 art galleries for the showcase and sale of Ecoproducts. ✅ Launching of 2 new products (Ecosource Balm and Ecosource Tea) in April 2024 and Trademarked, in addition to other ecoproducts, arts and crafts. Our mission is to create a sustainable world without wastes through the showcase of circular economy of plants, animals and humans living in harmony generating zero waste as we envision a sustainable world without wastes through reduce, reuse, recycle, refuse, repair, and upcycle; our 5Rs and a “u” by 2030. Our SDG Primary focus is Goal 12 and Goal 13 while our secondary SDG focus is Goals 1 , Goal 4, Goal 11 and Goal 17 So far, it’s been an interesting journey as each day unfolds as an onion skin, unraveling adventures, challenges, highs and lows but I’m glad I took that step to follow my dream! As we reminisce about this week at the number 1 circular economy showcase center, #TheWasteMuseum, we can't help but emphasize the importance of the environment to all of us. The event was held at the Cave of the Scrap Art Museum in Ile-Ife, Osun state, Nigeria, which is a state-of-the-art #Waste2Art center founded by Nigeria's contemporary artist, Dotun POPOOLA. Although the event is over, it is our believe that the ideas and insights shared by the keynote speaker Ifedolapo Runsewe of Freee Recycle Limited and the panelists will be act upon by the attendees.
