"Great, all this tech—but what does it mean for behavior?" Simone Meertens, board member of ZuidOostZorg, asked this during her talk on applying technology to support the elderly at today's Aletta Dive: Stronger Together: Technology as an ally towards a healthier life for vulnerable individuals. Simone’s insights set the tone as she highlighted the challenges of shifting organizational mindsets and healthcare approaches. Throughout the day, we explored how technology can be a powerful ally for vulnerable populations, from social robots to digital literacy. Guided by Jetse Goris, the event featured contributions from several inspiring speakers. The Jantina Tammes School of Digital Society, Technology and AI, our partner in organizing this event, played a key role, with its scientific director, Ming Cao, present to share insights. Following this, Job van 't Veer, Jenny van Doorn, Johan van der Meulen 📚, delivered a talk on context and goals. Participants then joined breakout sessions that covered critical topics like healthcare robotics, serious gaming, and digital literacy, with discussions on collaboration and funding. Demos showcased innovative solutions to support vulnerable groups, with each session focused on practical outcomes. We wrapped up the day with discussions on funding opportunities and a final panel featuring Erik Buskens, Simone Meertens, and Jelly Doornbos-Yska, further reinforcing the importance of collaboration and practical action. We would like to thank everyone who contributed to today’s success. The event highlighted the importance of collaboration—bringing together researchers, policymakers, practitioners, and businesses. Together, we are paving the way for innovative solutions that will improve the quality of life for those who need it most. Curious to see more pictures of the day? Exploring Sugars and Health: Insights from Marthe Walvoort on Creating a Healthy Living Environment In a recent interview with Jelle Posthuma, Marthe Walvoort, a research fellow at the Aletta Jacobs School of Public Health, shared her thoughts on the critical role our living environment plays in our health. She emphasized that being healthy is not solely an individual effort; it's influenced by external factors, particularly the nutrition environment we navigate daily. Marthe pointed out the prevalence of unhealthy food advertisements and how 80% of supermarket products fail to meet the guidelines of the Wheel of Five. To address these challenges, our School is exploring solutions, including potential taxes on sugar-sweetened beverages. As we focus on four key health themes in the upcoming years, creating a healthy living environment stands out as a priority. Marthe invites researchers, policymakers, and practitioners who share this vision to join our collaborative efforts. Marthe's outreach initiatives, which include engaging the public in discussions about sugars, highlight her commitment to knowledge transfer and community involvement. Through her work, she aims to shed light on the various types of sugars and their essential roles in health. We are looking out to the Aletta Dive this Friday; 'Stronger together: Technology as an ally towards a healthier life for vulnerable individuals'
#Science #AppliedScience #8D #DesignThinking #ParticipatiefActieonderzoek #Innovatie #Research

🌍 Cross-border Healthcare: Strengthening Collaborations for a Healthier Future Border regions across Europe, including those between the Netherlands and Germany, face significant healthcare challenges. These areas are often sparsely populated, have ageing populations, and experience staff shortages. Healthcare professionals tend to move to larger economic centers, leaving border regions with fewer resources. According to Stefan Pichler, board member of the Cross-border Institute of Healthcare Systems and Prevention (CBI), “In regions like South Tyrol, where I grew up, access to quality care is difficult, and we see similar patterns in other border areas.” Pichler explains that lower socioeconomic status in these regions contributes to unhealthy lifestyles and fewer healthy life years for residents. Despite sharing common challenges, the healthcare systems in the Netherlands and Germany are very different. Pichler highlights the need for cross-border collaboration to bridge these gaps and improve care for all. To address these issues, the Cross-border Health Meet-up on 18 November at the House of Connections - Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, Groningen, will bring together researchers, policymakers, healthcare professionals, and citizens. Participants will explore the latest findings from cross-border projects and discuss how cooperation can reduce waiting lists, save costs, and improve healthcare outcomes. Join us at the event to hear from experts like on how cross-border efforts are driving impact in border regions. 🎉 We are proud to share that Rina Knoeff, professor of Health and Humanities at the University of Groningen, has been awarded the prestigious Sarton Medal and Chair by Ghent University for her contributions to the history of medicine! 🏅 Prof. Knoeff, who is also affiliated with the Aletta Jacobs School of Public Health, will deliver her inaugural speech on October 17th, discussing how we can learn from premodern perspectives on the female body. Her research sheds light on how cultural, philosophical, and historical views shape our understanding of health — an approach that is central to Health Humanities. In her words: "Health is too important to leave solely to the doctors. It’s about understanding the human experience of health and illness." This recognition is a testament to her dedication to interdisciplinary research and her work within the Enlight network, focused on Health Humanities. Congratulations to Professor Knoeff on this well-deserved honor and a big thank you for her contributions. We wish her continued success in shaping the future of Health Humanities! 🎓👏 #HealthHumanities #MedicalHistory #RUG #GentUniversity #SartonMedal #InterdisciplinaryResearch

What motivates people to use technology? This question will be at the heart of the Aletta Dive ‘Stronger Together: Technology as an ally towards a healthier life for vulnerable individuals’ on Friday, October 18, 2024, from 10:00 to 16:00 at the House of Connections. We’ll explore the potential of technology for vulnerable populations, focusing on how innovations can enhance lives and promote healthy living. In anticipation of this event, Claudine Lamoth, Professor of movement analysis, smart technology, and aging at UMCG, shared her insights in an interview with Jelle Posthuma. She emphasizes the importance of user interaction, stating, “We want to understand what drives people to use technology or, conversely, why they might not. This varies by group, so characterizing the group is important.” Claudine's perspective aligns with our discussions at the Aletta Dive, where we will delve into these critical themes. Join us as we explore innovations, from social robots to digital literacy, in collaboration with the Jantina Tammes School of Digital Society, Technology & AI, University of Groningen. The event will feature breakout sessions addressing important topics, fostering collaboration among researchers, policymakers, and care staff. The Aletta Dive is an ideal space for professionals, researchers, and organizations dedicated to positively impacting vulnerable individuals' lives. Together, let’s inspire each other and work towards innovative solutions that truly matter. 🔗 Via this link you can read the full interview, register to the event and be part of this meaning conversation: https://lnkd.in/e_45pKVc.
