Over ons
Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions (AMS Institute) is a collaboration between Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Wageningen University & Research, Delft University of Technology, the City of Amsterdam. Launched in 2013, AMS Institute is a young public-private institute based in Amsterdam. Situated at the nexus between industry, government and academia, our mission is to free intelligence from its ivory tower and let it out into the world where it can do something useful. Aiming to solve problems in metropolitan areas, we combine brainpower, data and knowledge from the fields of design, planning, life sciences, engineering, physics, mathematics, information technology and social sciences. Through facilitating and initiating (research)projects that ‘fix’ things we create practical solutions, products, businesses activity and workable plans that benefit urban progress.

Cities amplify heat, funnel wind, and shape how we experience the climate. But how can urban design help us adapt? 🌡️ On April 10, AMS Institute is hosting the launch of the revised edition of Weather in the City, a seminal work by landscape architect and AMS PI Sanda Lenzholzer. Ten years after its first publication, the book is more relevant than ever. 📖 Join us for an evening of reflection and exchange, featuring a keynote by Lenzholzer and a panel discussion with urban climate experts from TU Delft, Hogeschool van Amsterdam, Gemeente Amsterdam and CB5. 💡 The event explores how we can better integrate urban climate knowledge into research, design, and policy. 📍 April 10 | 19:30–21:00 | AMS Institute 🔗 Sign up here: https://lnkd.in/eGi_F5hn Marjolein van Esch, Jeroen Kluck, David Huijben, Rixt Hofman, Friso Wiersum

How can we influence driver behavior to create smoother, greener mobility? 🚗🌍 Amsterdam’s ArenAPoort area is one of the busiest event districts in Europe. This comes with complex mobility challenges. Traffic congestion, parking stress, and reduced liveability are all part of the equation. But what if smart coordination, carpooling, and behavior-based interventions could turn the tide? In a recent Living Lab collaboration between Deloitte, BMW Nederland, Gemeente Amsterdam, and the Johan Cruijff ArenA, Metropolitan Analysis, Design and Engineering (MSc MADE) students explored how to improve traffic flows and reduce emissions while keeping the area accessible and vibrant. The project tested interventions like: ✅ Coordinated parking based on drivers' travel routes ✅ Carpooling solutions to reduce the number of vehicles ✅ Encouraging off-peak travel to ease congestion 💡 The result? Scalable insights into how tech and behavioral nudges can support more sustainable, liveable cities. 👉 Read more about the MSc MADE living labs here: https://lnkd.in/ewF3gBAj Gastón Cordero Chaves, Gilles Hermans, Inés Van der Klip, Pelle Topper, Sofia Rahman #UrbanMobility #LivingLab #SustainableCities #SmartTransport #MobilityInnovation

Amsterdam’s waterways are filling with plastic waste —where is it coming from? New data from the Urban Plastic Soup project, led by AMS Institute, Wageningen University & Research, and the City of Amsterdam, sheds light on the top culprits polluting the city’s canals. Among them? Food packaging, cigarette butts, and everyday plastic items like balloons and toys. 👉 142,500 cigarette butts were found—stacked up, that’s the height of 10 Eiffel Towers! 👉 Single-use food packaging continues to be a major contributor to plastic waste. 👉 Various plastic items like balloons and toys add to the pollution problem. While the city removes 42 tons of plastic waste annually, nearly 1.9 million pieces still flow into the North Sea every year. The project highlights not just the need for waste collection, but also prevention through circular economy strategies, behavioral change, and stronger policies on single-use plastics. Watch the video below to see how innovative interventions like The Great Bubble Barrier, The CanalCleaner, and The Shoreliner are helping tackle plastic waste at key locations across the city. 💡 Read more about the Urban Plastic Soup project in this article: https://rb.gy/g5aie4 💡 Explore the findings and solutions of this project on our brand new website: https://lnkd.in/ebC2sgqG Francesca Alberti, Lotte Geeraedts, Joppe van Driel, TAUW Nederland, TAUW Foundation, Noria | Urban Plastic Soup Solutions, The Great Bubble Barrier® , City of Amsterdam , TAUW Foundation, Week van de Circulaire Economie #UrbanPlasticSoup #CircularEconomy #PlasticPollution

How can public spaces evolve to support an innovative city district? At Marineterrein Amsterdam, a historical navy site transforming into a hub for living, working, and learning, Metropolitan Analysis, Design and Engineering (MSc MADE) students explored how public spaces can be adaptive, inclusive, and future-proof. Through interviews, co-creation, and case studies, they identified three key themes: 🌿 Sustainability and climate adaptation: Their research explored circular and nature-inclusive solutions to prepare urban public spaces for greater resilience and circularity. 💡 Innovation & experimentation: The Marineterrein is a testing ground for urban solutions. This work highlights how public space can facilitate continuous and inclusive innovation, ranging from pop-up experiments to integrated smart design. 👥 Community and identity: A strong sense of place ensures public spaces are inclusive, foster social connections, and create feelings of shared ownership. This research shows that including shared and flexible spaces catered to the community is necessary. The students designed urban furniture from repurposed materials as a tangible outcome, demonstrating circularity in action. Their insights offer a blueprint for Marineterrein’s future and beyond. 👉 Read more about the MSc MADE living labs here: https://lnkd.in/ewF3gBAj Bente Janssens, Jaap de Jong, Julika van den Berg, Tygo Haverkamp, Yasmine Schilder #UrbanInnovation #Placemaking #CircularDesign #AMSInstitute #MScMADE

Excitement was in the air at the AMS Startup Booster Batch #7 Demo Day! Last week, we saw urban-tech innovations take center stage as the latest cohort of startups tackled the city's biggest challenges such as climate resilience, energy, urban digitization, and circularity. The day was buzzing with fresh ideas and creative pitches, judged by an expert panel featuring Dorien Lathouwers (ROM InWest), Roy de Weerd (Rockstart), Anna C Mallon ⚡⚡⚡ (Global Investor CIRCLES), Cynthia de Wolf (ex-Innofest Nederland, SharpMarketing), and Pieter van den Wall Bake (TNO). 🌟 BuurBox, babyloop, and meterd took home the €5,000 cash prizes, but in truth, all the startups won by gaining in-kind prizes from our sponsors, including investor readiness training, pricing consulting, and legal advice. The support doesn’t stop at Demo Day! More than just celebrating innovation, the event highlighted the strength of Amsterdam's innovation ecosystem—bringing together partners, judges, mentors, and investors to spark meaningful connections for the future. ⚡️ This event is part of our broader commitment to fostering solutions that make cities more regenerative, resilient, and just. We’re proud to support entrepreneurs who are pushing the boundaries of what's possible for the urban future. 👉🏼 Read more about the inspiring solutions from Batch #7 here: https://lnkd.in/er_mpx_K 👉🏼 Join us tomorrow for the Funding Routes event, where early-stage investors and startups will explore the ins and outs of securing funding, from grants to venture capital: https://lu.ma/j0kfwcnb Florina Daniela Ungureanu, Ioannis Ioannidis
