🌱 Insightful visit to Renewi Organics in Lelystad! 🌱 Witnessing their pioneering work in composting and waste valorisation reaffirmed the critical role these processes play in advancing sustainability. Composting at Renewi not only reduces landfill waste but also enriches soil, supporting sustainable agriculture. The hands-on challenges at a large composting site, far away from the lab scale, highlight the complexities and real-world issues behind a fully realized circular economy. For example, nowadays: 🔹 (Micro)plastic contamination is close to impossible to eliminate. 🔹The removal of inert materials creates a side stream of waste that still ends up in an incinerator. 🔹The biogenic CO2 produced during the composting process should be captured and valorised. 🔹Excessive salinity, especially in food waste, makes compost less effective as a soil amendment. Thank you Joop Suurmeijer for hosting us, and sharing your educated point of view on the challenges that composting, and in general waste valorisation, face in the Netherlands. What a nice coffee we had last week at Hid Last Thursday, our BD in Chemistry for Life Sciences Dr. Lays da Cruz encountered great synergy among the members and researchers of Sanquin in Amsterdam. Some of the bright minds of the Health & Innovation District Amsterdam (Hid) came to their campus garden for a coffee during the Meet & Greet, to discuss collaboration in Amsterdam, The City of Science. We touched upon how global organizations can play an important role in the local ecosystem; how clusters of expertise can mutually collaborate on a more straight connection; how an innovative ecosystem can attract more talent, funding, and relevant players by being strongly connected; and a lot more. Artur Schweidtmann is a tenure-track assistant professor for chemical engineering at Delft University of Technology and director of the Process Intelligence Research lab (www.pi-research.org). "Transforming Process Engineering with Generative AI" Generative Artificial Intelligence has gained immense traction across diverse sectors, exemplified by ChatGPT's success. According to Artur, it holds immense potential to reshape chemical process engineering too, and his work continuously brings new examples of practical applications in industry. #H2A Symposium: great developments for Green Hydrogen in Amsterdam, but lots still needs to be done! Yesterday our team participated in the 2nd Hydrogen2Amsterdam conference, organized among the others from our Gold member Port of Amsterdam ⚓. Highlights: 🛢️ The Minister of Energy of the Oman Sultanate presented the ambition of the country of becoming a great producer of (one of) the cheapest green H2 in the world, ready to be shipped to terminals like the Port of Amsterdam. 🗣️Several panel discussions shed light on the amount of work that still needs to be done to unlock the potential of green hydrogen at scale. The whole sector was built with a strong policy drive, and it is now time to build the market of green H2 for sustainable industry. 🥇 Daniel Teichmann, Founder and CEO of Hydrogenious LOHC, was awarded by Dorine Bosman on behalf of Missie H2 with a Hydrogen Gold Medal for his efforts in promoting the hydrogen economy. ⚡Em. Prof. Ad van Wijk presented his latest project, in Egypt, on sustainable energy production, storage, and transportation. Insightful his research on the most promising areas of the world for clean energy production. Particularly interesting were the contributions to the program of Michel Heijdra, Ellen Ruhotas, Baruch Halpert, Jurriaan de Jonge, Albert Kassies and Dhruv Gulati
