Wij feliciteren graag onze collega’s die zijn geslaagd voor het Formalities Officer examen. Met trots kunnen we mededelen dat de volgende collega’s hun certificering als Formalities Officer succesvol hebben behaald: • Hanie Yusoff (kantoor Den Haag) • Adriaan van der Klooster (kantoor Antwerpen) • Astrid Kloosterman (kantoor Leeuwarden) Voor Hanie zat de FO opleiding vol verrassingen en strikvragen. Door tijdsgesbrek was het moeilijk om alle stof te verwerken, maar de FO-docenten waren ondersteunend en zorgzaam. Ondanks het zware proces, is ze tevreden met het eindresultaat. Adriaan vond het examen uitdagend en veelzijdig, met een brede toetsing van octrooiprocedures. In tegenstelling tot examens voor een octrooigemachtigde, vereiste het FO-examen inzicht in verschillende rechtstelsels wereldwijd. Dit examen heeft hem geholpen om IE-rechten wereldwijd te begrijpen, klanten te volgen in hun wereldwijde activiteiten en met deze kennis octrooigemachtigden te ontzorgen zodat ze zich kunnen focussen op de technische inhoud van het octrooi. Astrid vond het een pittig examen. Hoewel ze door de oefenexamens wist wat haar te wachten stond, was de tijdsdruk het lastigst. Ondanks haar jarenlange ervaring, heeft ze toch nieuwe dingen geleerd, vooral over Trademarks en Designs. We are proud to announce that the following colleagues have successfully completed their Formalities Officer certification: - Hanie Yusoff (The Hague office) - Adriaan van der Klooster (Antwerp office) - Astrid Kloosterman (Leeuwarden office) For Hanie, the FO training was full of surprises and trick questions. Due to time constraints, it was difficult to digest all the material, but the FO teachers were supportive and caring. Despite the tough process, she is satisfied with the end result. Adriaan found the exam challenging and multifaceted, with broad testing of patent procedures. Unlike exams for a patent attorney, the FO exam required an understanding of different legal systems worldwide. This exam helped him understand IP rights globally, follow clients in their global activities and use this knowledge to unburden patent attorneys so they can focus on the technical content of the patent. Astrid found it to be a tough exam. Although she knew from the practice exams what to expect, the time pressure was the most difficult. Despite her years of experience, she still learned new things, especially about Trademarks and Designs. AI ontdekt overeenkomsten tussen zeldzame en veelvoorkomende ziektes  https://lnkd.in/e9iP8S6a Recente doorbraken in AI onthullen dat zeldzame en niet-zeldzame aandoeningen vaak meer gemeen hebben dan gedacht. Dat maakt nieuwe behandelmethoden mogelijk. Zo lijken de biologische processen van de zeldzame ziekte Niemann-Pick op die van atherosclerose en heeft onderzoek naar cystische fibrose geleid tot vooruitgang in de behandeling van COPD. Edward Nieuwenhuis, hoogleraar zeldzame aandoeningen aan het Erasmus MC in Rotterdam, benadrukt in het bovenstaande interview dat AI helpt bij het vinden van patronen en overeenkomsten tussen verschillende aandoeningen. Dit leidt tot persoonlijkere en effectievere behandelstrategieën. Samenwerking tussen internationale en Belgische ziekenhuizen, zoals het UZ Leuven, speelt een belangrijke rol in deze ontwikkelingen. In België wordt AI al ingezet voor onderzoek naar zeldzame ziekten. Een voorbeeld hiervan is de samenwerking tussen Belgische universiteiten en onderzoekscentra om AI te gebruiken bij de diagnose en behandeling van zeldzame genetische aandoeningen op basis van een computeranalyse. Onder andere onderzoekers van de Université libre de Bruxelles-Vrije Universiteit Brussel, het UZ Brussel en het Universitair Kinderziekenhuis Koningin Fabiola waren betrokken. Deze AI kan onder meer patronen in genetische data herkennen. Dat levert snellere en nauwkeurigere diagnoses door onderzoekers en artsen op. AI-algoritmen worden verder gebruikt om tumoren te analyseren en te classificeren op basis van genetische profielen. Bij borstkanker bijvoorbeeld helpt AI bij het bepalen van de gevoeligheid van tumoren voor bepaalde hormonen en medicijnen, waardoor behandelingen beter op individuele patiënten kunnen worden afgestemd. In veel jurisdicties is het niet mogelijk om software, inclusief AI, als dusdanig te octrooieren. In Europa kan software echter bescherming genieten als een computer-implemented invention, op voorwaarde dat de uitvinding een technisch karakter heeft. Daarnaast moet de technische bijdrage van de uitvinding niet voor de hand liggend zijn. In de Verenigde Staten kunnen software-uitvindingen worden geoctrooieerd als ze bruikbaar, nieuw en inventief zijn. Wetenschappers vermijden soms het octrooieren van hun onderzoek vanwege 'open science'-principes, maar octrooien kunnen deze doelen juist ondersteunen. Het kan dienen als een strategie om onderzoeksresultaten beschikbaar te maken voor academisch en non-profit gebruik, terwijl commerciële toepassingen worden gereguleerd. (English below) Trots kondigen wij aan dat drie collega's zijn geslaagd voor het European Qualifying Examination (EQE) en nu gekwalificeerd zijn als Europees gemachtigde: - Robin Ogier (kantoor Brussel) - Timon Vankeirsbilck (kantoor Antwerpen) - Thomas Spruit (kantoor Den Haag) Robin deelde mee dat een van de grootste uitdagingen was om de drang te weerstaan om te extrapoleren op de gegeven informatie en de gestelde vragen, vooral voor de papers C en D. In plaats daarvan vond hij het belangrijk om rechttoe rechtaan te antwoorden op vragen, zoals geoefend. Voor Robin was het waardevoller om te weten hoe je efficiënt naar informatie kon zoeken in verschillende bronnen dan om alles uit je hoofd te leren. Timon vergeleek het EQE-traject met het lopen van een marathon - soms veeleisend en slopend, maar uiteindelijk de moeite waard. De kick van het slagen, zegt hij, is onbeschrijfelijk. Thomas was het eens met de marathon analogie en merkte op dat na het afronden van de EQE, men snel verder gaat met het oppakken van alle activiteiten en taken die tijdens de voorbereidingsperiode werden uitgesteld. Van harte gefeliciteerd met deze prachtige prestatie! Instead, he found it important to respond to questions straightforwardly as practiced. For Robin, knowing how to efficiently search for information in various resources was more valuable than memorizing everything. Timon compared the EQE journey to running a marathon—demanding and grueling at times, but ultimately rewarding. The thrill of passing, he says, is indescribable. Thomas agreed with the marathon analogy, noting that after completing the EQE, one quickly moves on to pick up all the activities and tasks that were postponed during the preparation period. On June 11th, the finale of the Philips Innovation Award took place, with Arnold & Siedsma participating as a gold partner this year. Our colleagues Guido Meindertsma, Maarten van den Berg, Daniel Colenbrander, and Dania van Leeuwen attended the event.   In the Rough Diamond category, AlphaPace was made winner for its innovative technology that targets tumors more precisely while leaving healthy tissue unaffected. Recyclen van plastic grote uitdaging sinds komst bioplastics   Zoals uit het artikel in de NRC van 22 april 2024 over bioplastics blijkt, is voor recyclingbedrijven het recyclen van plastic een grote uitdaging geworden sinds de komst van allerlei typen bioplastics. Niet-fossiel plastic dat niet composteerbaar is kan worden gerecycled zoals fossiel plastic. Maar als het composteerbaar is moet het bij het restafval. Alleen als het plastic thuiscomposteerbaar is, kan het op de composthoop.   Hieronder een overzicht van een aantal soorten bioplastics en hun belangrijkste kenmerken, ter illustratie. Er is hier nog wel discussie over.   Bioplastics of biobased plastics zijn geproduceerd uit duurzame bronnen, zoals plantaardige oliën, maïszetmeel, of microbiële cellulose. Maar dat betekent nog niet dat ze ook composteerbaar zijn, dat wil zeggen biologisch afbreekbaar tot natuurlijke elementen, zoals water, koolstofdioxide en biomassa binnen een tijdslimiet van twaalf weken. Is een bioplastic industrieel composteerbaar, dan is er een industriële machine nodig om het af te breken. Bij thuis-compenseerbaar bioplastic doet de natuur het werk, bijvoorbeeld in een composteerbak.   PLA wordt geproduceerd uit gefermenteerde plantaardige suikers, meestal afkomstig van maïs of suikerriet. PHA komt van bacteriën die suikers of lipiden fermenteren. Polymeren uit zetmeel zijn afkomstig van gewassen zoals maïs, aardappelen, en tapioca. Bio-PBS heeft barnsteenzuur als basis, en ook PBAT, Bio-PP en Bio-PE komen van fossiele grondstoffen. Cellulose-acetaat tot slot heeft houtpulp als bron.   Innovaties in bioplastics richten zich op het gebruik van nieuwe grondstoffen (bijvoorbeeld afvalproducten), evenals verbeterde productieprocessen zoals geavanceerde fermentatie- en enzymatische technieken. Ook zijn verwerkingsbedrijven en andere ondernemingen uit de sector zoekende naar betere methoden voor recycling en composteerbaarheid, waaronder chemische recycling en (nieuwe) thuiscomposteerbare bioplastics.   De octrooigemachtigden en advocaten van Arnold & Siedsma adviseren bedrijven over het vastleggen van hun innovaties en het exploiteren en handhaven van octrooien.   #Recycling #Bioplastics #Octrooirecht #ArnoldSiedsma
