Moldova has spoken 📢 After voting to join the EU, Moldovans have now re-elected their pro-EU president, Maia Sandu. "Today, you have given a lesson in democracy," said Sandu to her fellow citizens. This victory stems from years of fighting for democracy by activists who stayed behind - in a country where 1 in 4 lives abroad. “The drums of democracy”🥁 In August 2018, we travelled to Moldova to produce a multimedia story with local storytellers. A country with 1 in 4 people living abroad, at the time of our visit, Moldova witnessed a series of protests that held the government accountable for its corruption, lack of reforms and low democratic standards. This became the focus of our story - its protagonists, four young activists fighting for a better future, shared the sentiment that Moldova’s democracy was “under serious threat”. 6 years on, the drums of democracy in Moldova keep sounding. On 20 October, Moldovans voted in favour of EU integration, albeit by a narrow margin. We hope that this vote can mark the start of the better future the protagonists of our story have been fighting for. A 'layered and polyphonic approach' to historical storytelling - that was how the European Commission described Herinneringscentrum Kamp Westerbork in 2014. That year, Westerbork was awarded the prestigious European Heritage Label. It is one of only 60 heritage sites to be recognised so far. Fast-forward 10 years later and things are not as rosy for the memorial center. Despite rising visitor numbers, it is struggling to survive because of increased energy, wage and tax costs - as well as decreased subsidies. Want to support Camp Westerbork?
