What does the future of work look like? We explored this question from multiple perspectives at the inaugural Wherever Whenever – Work Culture Festival, held at ORGATEC Cologne. The event was masterminded by Stefan Kokkes, director of the Industrieverband Büro und Arbeitswelt e. V. (IBA) and I contributed by naming the festival, inviting Bas Koopmans (Wellness) to design its graphic identity, and enlisting Pieter Kool (Carbon Studio) to create its spatial aesthetic. I also developed and moderated the English-language program alongside the insightful Tracey Ingram, while Wolfram Sauer curated and moderated the German segment, generously sharing his expertise. Many thanks to Barbara Schwaibold, Jasmin Najiyya and Leonie Bothe for making things happen. Festival highlights included Tobias Revell of Arup, who imagined a future where drones harvest wine in Norway and transport it via sail-ships, co-living reaches new heights, and AI enables managers to oversee hundreds of businesses. Claude Dutson offered insights from her anthropological study of Silicon Valley’s tech workplaces, revealing how chance encounters foster innovation. Viviane M. examined art’s impact on creative power, while Ulrich Blum from Zaha Hadid Architects demonstrated how AI can optimize workspace layouts. Its redevelopment includes:- The retention of 5 listed buildings and 7 new buildings 🕋 Four exhibition and conference venues, including the original 1886 Grand Hall ✔️ A 1,575-seat theatre, the largest purpose-built theatre to open in London in nearly 50 years 🎭 A 4,000-capacity live music venue 🎵 A new co-educational senior school 👨🏫 Hyatt Regency and citizenM hotels 🏨 An incredible 30+ restaurants and bars 🥤 550,000 sq ft of new offices 🏤 The redevelopment is being financed by owners Deutsche Finance and designed by Heatherwick Studio and SPPARC Studio.
