Brazil’s Federal Prosecution Authority (MPF) has recommended the suspension of all ongoing and future REDD+ and carbon credit projects on Indigenous and traditional territories in the state of Amazonas. This recommendation follows concerns about potential timber laundering linked to these projects. The MPF cited CCCA’s analysis for Mongabay, which revealed that two major carbon offsetting projects in the Brazilian Amazon were involved in laundering timber from illegally deforested areas. The carbon credits from these projects were sold to companies like Nestlé and Toshiba. A month after the investigation, Brazilian authorities conducted a raid on the projects, resulting in the arrest of five individuals and the seizure of their assets. https://lnkd.in/erhPAhmT

Who would suspect their morning supplement is both a driver of deforestation and catalyst for the displacement of Indigenous peoples? CCCA's remote sensing and supply chain analysis supported an investigation by The Bureau of Investigative Journalism, ITV News, The Guardian, and O Joio e O Trigo. The investigation found that multinational companies sourced collagen from Brazilian cattle raised on farms responsible for 2,600 km2 of forest loss. Some of this collagen can be traced back to Nestlé-owned Vital Proteins, a best-selling supplements brand. See: https://lnkd.in/dm8t2qPS After the story was published, Vital Proteins informed retailers that it would immediately cease sourcing collagen from the Amazon. Additionally, European parliamentarians said they would consider including collagen in a law banning imported commodities linked to forest destruction. Elisângela Mendonça, Andrew Wasley, Fábio Zuker, Grace M., and Martin Stew received the Covering Climate Now journalist award in the food and agriculture category for their work on this story. Heartfelt congratulations to all of them. https://lnkd.in/dMN5Ak2D

When the overall cost of land grabbing and deforestation exceeds potential profits: CCCA supported an investigation by #TheInterceptBrasil and the #PulitzerCenter ’s #RainforestInvestigationsNetwork. This investigation revealed how three landowners orchestrated the single-largest instance of deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon, clearing 6,469 hectares (15,985 acres) of forest in the southern part of Pará state. Based on the findings from this investigation, CCCA submitted a formal complaint to Brazilian federal law enforcement authorities. Yesterday, the Federal Police acted on this complaint, executing eight search and seizure warrants. They seized assets worth more than R$ 630 million (USD 11.5 million) and targeted several suspects. Over two years ago, CCCA partnered with #RevistaPiauí and #OCCRP to investigate how an organized crime network illegally extracted Yellow Ipê hardwood from the Amazon and smuggled it to New York. The investigative report was published in January 2022: https://lnkd.in/eHw8ENFE Earlier this week, the Pará Civil Police launched “Operation Dark Wood” against this criminal network, arresting seven suspects and executing nine search and seizure warrants. https://lnkd.in/ee2BXszm This is yet another example demonstrating that the era of impunity for environmental crimes is over. CCCA is proud to have contributed to this outcome.
