Last week, we were in Beijing for the Climate Adaptation Workshop Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy (GCoM) Asia + NCSC China to present our recommendation paper on urban #resilience and the design of nature-based solutions #NbS in the context of climate adaptation. 35 Chinese cities attended the event and shared their experience and roadmap to respond locally to increasing climate challenges. The document focused on a multi scale approach (city, district, urban blocks, streets, buildings) of climate risk analysis (floods, droughts, urban heat stress), the design of targeted nature-based solutions and their cost-benefit analysis. 21 Chinese pilot cities are now set to work together on a methodology and common framework to address climate risks. How do Chinese and European cities anticipate climate risks and prepare for better urban resilience? Last week, we had the opportunity to participate to the Webinar on Climate Resilient Cities organised by the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy (GCoM) Asia and NCSC China (National Center for Strategic Research and International Cooperation on Climate Change, Ministry of Environment), where we presented insights from Dutch cities on their strategies and cost-benefit analysis of green-blue urban design and nature-based solutions, such as urban water buffers. The City of Shenzhen also presented their "sponge city approach", ecological "control line" and urban ventilation corridors to make the city increasingly resilient to impacts of rainstorms, typhoons and heat stress on its communities. NCSC presented a list of 39 pilot cities across China that require further research to develop contextualized response to climate in terms of urban planning and design. Preparing the ground for a 'Sustainable & Smart Urban Mobility Project' in Iskandar Puteri, Malaysia! Since March 2024, Citilinks is busy working in collaboration with UTM Universiti Technology Malaysia on a smart and green mobility corridor planned to run across Iskandar Puteri, a project involving interoperable mobility services and BRT on dedicated lanes, tactical urban densification and micro-TOD / e-mobility hubs, land value capture (LVC) and mobility value capture (MVC), building physical & digital twins of a shared mobility & logistics axis, and a climate-sensitive landscape involving pedestrian green infrastructure and nature-based solutions (NbS) to improve walkability in a tropical climate. This study is commissioned by the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy (GCoM) Asia (EU-funded) and stands as the implementation phase of the project, following the elaboration of the Climate Action Plan of the City of Iskandar Puteri.
