Making commodities work for everyone
Over ons
The Common Fund for Commodities (CFC) is an autonomous intergovernmental financial institution, established in 1989 within the framework of the United Nations. The CFC provides support to projects investing in commodity value chains to deliver sustainable development impact from “field to the fork”. The support is offered mainly through loans to finance equipment, working capital or trade finance needs. The CFC seeks applications of projects that have reached a state of economic, social and environmental sustainability. These applications should clearly show operational and financial viability, with a proven track record. CFC solicits proposals through the Open Call which is made public every 6 months with deadlines in April and October each year.

As part of our unwavering commitment to advancing the ACT Fund, Michael van den Berg will join the GIIN Impact Forum 2024 in Amsterdam! 🌍 Fresh from the dynamic conversations at Climate Week at the United Nations, we aim to build upon the momentum generated in New York, deepening discussions around climate finance, sustainable agriculture, smallholder agriculture, and blended finance. These are not just buzzwords; they are the cornerstones of a future where financial markets are leveraged to bring concessional and de-risked finance for SMEs(small and medium enterprises) and smallholders to drive real, transformative change and thereby alleviating poverty for a liveable world. The Global Impact Investing Network (#GIIN) offers a crucial opportunity to redefine global finance and finding actionable solutions that are not only necessary but urgent. 🌿 #ImpactInvesting #ClimateAction #SustainableAgriculture #BlendedFinance #ACTFund

Hear insights from Michael van den Berg's engaging discussion with Daniela Vega and Anna Merrall Nelson at UNGA Climate Week🌍 As our momentum grows, we aim to capitalize on our VACS collaboration with U.S. Department of State Special Envoy for Global Food Security Dr. Cary Fowler to drive impactful change in food security and resilience, ultimately building stronger, more resilient food systems.🌿
ICYMI: Michael van den Berg, Daniela Vega, and Anna Merrall Nelson took a moment during UNGA Climate Week to discuss living soils that are important to ecosystems and farmers. Sharing information between farming communities can help improve nutrition and reduce hunger. With the VACS Partnership and CFC, we are working to make stronger, more resilient food systems. On this International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, we are reminded that the struggle against poverty is not just about economics—it’s about dignity, opportunity, and justice. 👩🌾 Today, over 700 million people around the world still face extreme poverty, a staggering figure that reflects deep systemic challenges. Yet, as daunting as this reality may be, it is also a call to action—a call for collaboration, innovation, and unwavering commitment to a world where no one is left behind. 🌍 As CFC we acknowledge the resilience and strength of those who endure the hardships of poverty every day. Their stories inspire us to strive for a world where everyone has the chance to thrive, and where the cycle of poverty is not just addressed but fundamentally broken. 🤝 #EndPoverty #Empowerment #DignityForAll #PovertyEradication #Impact

🌍 The CFC welcomes the Pact for the Future’s focus on eradicating poverty and developing sustainable food systems. Adopted at the UN Summit 2024, the pact is a critical step towards the global cooperation needed to address humanity's biggest challenges. Key actions that align with our mission include eradicating hunger, reducing poverty, closing the financing gap, humanizing value chains and promoting gender equality. We will continue playing our part by empowering smallholder farmers, supporting the adoption of climate-smart technologies and strengthening food systems. ☕ Celebrating smallholders on International Coffee Day! While enjoying your morning brew, spare a thought for the hardworking hands behind every cup. 👩🌾 Coffee producers worldwide face numerous challenges including: 📉 Price volatility 💵Low incomes 🌱 Climate change Each one threatens their livelihoods and their ability to overcome poverty. The key to their survival is fair trade, access to markets and sustainability.🌍 These are core values in all our coffee investments. We pledge to continue raising awareness and supporting initiatives that ensure fair prices, better working conditions, and sustainable practices for the farmers who make our daily coffee possible. 🍃🤝 #CFC #FairTrade #SupportFarmers #Sustainability #CoffeeDay2024 #Coffee

UN Climate Week 2024 was a great opportunity for our ACT Fund Investment Director, Michael van den Berg, to connect with innovators in agtech such as Andrew Mack. 🌍✨ Michael also spread the word about how ACT Fund is supporting smallholder farmers to benefit from regenerative farming methods, with a little help from a handful of Central Park soil (which he's returned!).🍃 👩🌾 The event has made us even more determined to amplify ACT Fund's positive impact where it is needed most. 🤝
Super positive lightning trip to #NYC for #UNGA meeting new partners/customers and catching up with #ag sector #bigthinkers from around the world talking #food and #climate. Great discussions of the need for #soil conservation, #regenerative practices, #sustainability and #efficiency between #supplychains and #smallholderfarmers, especially in Africa and LatinAmerica. In addition to the expected #buzzword salad and calls to action - no judgement, it is UN Week after all - there were some real #insightful moments for me… 🌍 Discussions about #agriculture as an extractive sector that needs to better serve the African continent… “For 600 years African agriculture has been like mining - extractive and of limited development benefit to Africans” 🏝 Thinking about the scale of #landdegradation and the estimate that 65% of Africa’s arable land has been depleted in just the last 70 years -- while population has expanded six-fold 🏵 The need to develop #naturebasedsolutions, including natural fertilizers – and the crucial need to find new ways to get these innovations out to #smallholderfarmers at scale ✅ The crucial link between #farming, #resiliency and #marketaccess in fragile democracies like #Guatemala 🏞 And finally my new friend Michael van den Berg of the Common Fund for Commodities who brought a handful of Central Park dirt to his speech to emphasize just how the 100 billion microorganisms in a pile of dirt work together to create soil and nutrients for our food... and how WE need to work together like the microbes do! There are urgent problems to be solved and money to be made. Back to the office to get solving. 🌱✨ Celebrating 36 years of the Common Fund for Commodities!✨🌱 Since 1989, the Common Fund for Commodities (CFC) has been working to break the cycle of poverty through impact investing. By supporting value chain diversification for smallholders and SMEs, we empower farmers and producers to thrive. 👩🌾 👨🌾 The CFC team recently visited Fruittuin Van West, a biodynamic orchard in Amsterdam, as a part of our celebration of our 36th anniversary of existence. 🌿 At Fruittuin van West, an innovative entrepreneurship for circular and integrated processes with the environment, creating a system where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts—fruit growing, poultry farming, biodiversity, and composting all working in harmony. 🍃🍎🌻 As we reflect on our visit and journey, we remain committed to fostering partnerships that promote sustainable agriculture and empower smallholder farmers. 🤝 Together, we aim to drive positive impact and build a fairer, more resilient global economy. 🌍💚 #CFC #SustainableDevelopment #ImpactInvestment #Agriculture #TeamCFC #SmallholderFarmers
