[ Direct Current Dialogues # 6 ] Discover the insights of Dr. Marco Stieneker from Maschinenfabrik Reinhausen (MR), a Current/OS Partner, in our #DirectCurrent Dialogue # 6. 𝗖𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁/𝗢𝗦 Why develop #DC? 𝙈𝙖𝙧𝙘𝙤 𝙎𝙩𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙠𝙚𝙧 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗖𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀: it optimizes the integration of renewable sources like solar power, and an increasing number of appliances that operate on direct current (DC), such as electric vehicles, electronics, and LEDs. Integrating renewable energy into alternating current (AC) grids results in significant #EnergyLosses due to multiple conversion stages. Developing #DCNetworks minimizes these inefficiencies and maximizes the potential of green energy. 𝗖𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁/𝗢𝗦 What is the benefit of DC? 𝙈𝙖𝙧𝙘𝙤 𝙎𝙩𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙠𝙚𝙧 A major benefit of DC systems is their ability to reduce energy losses by eliminating the need for conversion between DC and AC. When solar power and EV systems are integrated with AC grids, losses can reach up to 12%. By implementing DC networks, energy flows directly, reducing losses and making energy use more efficient. Moreover, with increasing #GridCongestion, the advantage of DC systems is not just improved efficiency—it’s fundamentally about the 𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝗯𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗖 𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗱 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗱. This #Flexibility allows for faster project deployment and a smoother integration of renewables while increasing the reliability of the energy supply system. 𝗖𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁/𝗢𝗦 How is MR engaging with other industry partners and the Current/OS initiative to drive the implementation of DC? 𝙈𝙖𝙧𝙘𝙤 𝙎𝙩𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙠𝙚𝙧 MR is deeply involved in driving the adoption of DC technology through collaboration with various partners and initiatives like Current/OS. MR participates in multiple R&D projects, including the HPC-Prime project, which focuses on developing high power charging stations for DC grids, and the Kopernikus ENSURE project, which targets the set-up of DC-microgrids including an isolating Interlink-Converter station. Additionally, 𝗠𝗥 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗱 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 to accelerate the implementation of DC technology. With Current/OS, MR collaborates with global partners to create the necessary standards and plug-and-play solutions like fast-charging stations (GRIDCON® DC Charger) and DC-DC converters (GRIDCON® DC Transformer) to integrate energy storage systems for DC systems. MR is at the forefront of 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲, 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗗𝗖 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. 𝗖𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁/𝗢𝗦 Thank you!
