Applying data science for the benefit of society
Over ons
Data science, a fast-growing interdisciplinary field of science, is the main driver for innovation in the coming years. The Data Science research group of The Hague University of Applied Sciences is focused on conducting world-class research in the field of human-centered applied data science and artificial intelligence. Through the use of methods, algorithms, technologies and/or tools we generate insights from data allowing us to discover important patterns and make predictions. These data and the insights gained from them are used to support decision-making, management, governance and policy in a chaotic world from a human perspective.

The future of human-centered technologies in the spotlight at the Asia-Europe Foundation This week Lampros Stergioulas, our Professor of #DataScience & #AI at #THUAS and UNESCO Chair in AI and Data Science for Society, in Netherlands, gave an insightful Keynote talk on Ethical Society 5.0 as part of the ASEFYLS Capacity Buildings 2024 of ASEFEdu, highlighting the potential benefits as well as the ethical and security risks of new transformative technologies. Professor Stergioulas concluded his talk with a call to action and an invitation for participants to join in the collective effort to shape the ethical landscape of future technologies together.
This past Tuesday, 9 July, we welcomed our participants of the ASEFYLS Capacity Buildings 2024 to our second Knowledge Building Phase session on the topic of Ethical Society 5.0. Starting off the session, participants had the pleasure of listening to Paula Boddington, Associate Professor of Philosophy and Healthcare at the Geller Institute of Aging and Memory, School of Biomedical Sciences, at the University of West London. With an extensive background in ethics and philosophy, Dr Boddington discussed the impact technology has on our everyday lives and how our understanding of technology may impact our view of their ethical implications. She encouraged participants to build a better understanding of themselves and the world we live in, including the role we play as a member of society, and to continue to exercise critical thinking in our ever-changing and increasingly complex world. Continuing with our second speaker, we welcomed Prof Lampros Stergioulas, Professor of Data Science & AI, at the Hague University of Applied Sciences as well as the UNESCO Chair in AI and Data Science for Society. Prof Stergioulas gave an insightful presentation on the future of human-centered technology, and the double-edged sword of new transformative technologies – highlighting both their benefits if developed responsibly, as well as potential ethical and security risks. He ended his presentation by calling participants to action and invited them to join the collective in the effort to shape the ethical landscape of future technologies together. With two out of five sessions completed, we are thrilled to see the engagement of the participants and look forward to keeping the momentum going for the rest of the programme! Save the date: Workshop on Open Science and AI! 🔬 🤖 Scientific research is evolving because of new artificial intelligence applications. For example, AI makes it possible to quickly analyze large datasets. But what if we want to make science more open? Can AI help us achieve this? On the afternoon of Monday 23 September, the Nederlandse Unesco Commissie and the Unesco Chair in Diversity and Inclusion in Global Science at CWTS | Leiden University will host a workshop on artificial intelligence and Open Science. The focus of the afternoon will be on the engagement of societal actors. How can AI applications help engage a broader audience in research? Can artificial intelligence play a role in launching citizen science projects or in enhancing scientific volunteering? Researchers and other stakeholders are invited to actively engage with these questions during the workshop, and to share ideas on how AI can positively contribute to making scientific research more inclusive. Members of the Data Science research group have led two of the three themes of the Community of Practice on AI in Education. We presented the results of our work on leading educational innovations and exploring how to best utilise AI with ethics in mind.
It needs a whole lot of human intelligence to oversee and foresee the immense implications of artificial intelligence. That's also why I'm part of the AI Expert Group on 'The impact of AI on the field, society & ethics' at De Haagse Hogeschool / The Hague University of Applied Sciences. Together with Kanan Dhru, Mark Vondenhoff, Christian Detweiler, Sylvia I. Bergh and Juuk van Andel, we searched for international frameworks, investigated methodologies, interviewed several colleagues and most of all: we explored all kinds of avenues to be able to make sense of it all when presenting our provisional findings on Demo Day. Being at the forefront surely isn't the easiest route, but by far the most interesting one (I think). We might have a rocky road ahead of us, so maybe we should rebrand ourselves as 'the red team for responsible AI' ;) Like to learn more about our first findings and those of the other two working groups? Feel free to reach out. Looking forward to navigating the next reality together! #ai #genai #responsibleai #ethics #aihub #nextreality
