Tien Procent Club Rotterdam invited Effective Environmentalism to speak at their special edition about #climatechange, along with Rosanne van der Lugt, Axel van 't Westeinde, Chris Julien and Magnolia Tovar and Leonie Brand. The big questions for Effective Environmentalism were: 1. What is it, exactly? 2. Why should people give to effective climate change charities (when other causes are equally or possibly more deserving)? 🌐 We aim to create a hub for charity advice, career consulting, research promotion, and a community of orgs focused on impactful environmental projects. Organizations like The Good Food Institute Europe, Future Matters, Project InnerSpace or Future Cleantech Architects may not be flashy but do essential work. 🌊 80,000 Hours recently noted that while environmental challenges are important, they're less neglected than other global issues. However, we believe that resources against those challenges are often wasted on ineffective efforts like personal lifestyle changes or unproven carbon offset projects. 🌱 So Effective Environmentalism asks: how can we have the greatest positive impact on the environment? We believe there are neglected interventions in the environmental space deserving of our attention and means - with much to explore and improve still! #TienProcentClub #EffectiveGiving #Environmentalism

💹 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗯𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 We still need a lot of research, development, and innovation in clean technologies and climate adaptation to minimize climate damages, but innovation has been lacking in some crucial areas. Many of these innovation gaps can be overcome by using pull mechanisms for incentivizing climate innovation. The challenge: 📃 Patents aren't always a great solution, because the benefits of climate innovations often public, instead of private. If you have a solution that consumers don't want - no company wants a patent. 💰 'Push financing', giving grants to research organisations, is often ineffective, as the government doesn't know which groups will be successful, and which policies to support. Research groups have no incentive for promoting adoption of their solution. The solutions: 🏆 Promise to reward the first group or person to come up with a climate breakthrough innovation. ✌️ Promise to buy a solution once it's available at a given price, which incentivizes scale and adoption. Applied to climate change: 🌽 Reward the invention of heat-resistant crop varieties of sorghum and maize, without trapping farmers in restrictive patents. 🏗 Reward the production of carbon-free concrete in government procurement 💧 Commit to buy green hydrogen once it becomes available at a low price. Want to go in-depth? 🚗🍔 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗽𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝘃𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗶𝗻𝘀 The adoption of electric cars has grown tremendously in the last decade. Alternative proteins, like plant-based meat, have seen growth as well, but sales have now slowed down in some places, including the US. It's important to scale up the sector, as agriculture contributes as much to global warming as transport does. What can the alternative protein sector learn from the EV industry? 🟰 Price and quality parity are critical for mainstream adoption. Alternative protein brands should work to close the gap on cost and taste. 🏛 Supportive public policies enhance innovation and industry activity. The US government has enabled the growth of the EV market, and should do so too for alternative proteins. 💰 Public and private funding to achieve impact at scale. Funding for alternative proteins is still hundred times smaller than funding for batteries and EVs. 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗶𝗻 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗶𝘀𝗺 (and what we're missing) Greer Gosnell from Rethink Priorities has mapped the climate research that the #EffectiveAltruism movement does, and where it can become stronger. 🏛️ The main research organisations in the EA climate space are Founders Pledge and Giving Green. The former focuses on minimizing expected climate damage, while the latter focuses on mitigating emissions to minimize human suffering. 🐄 In the author's point of view, a major missing component is the limited consideration of co-benefits to e.g. air pollution and animal welfare. ❤ Offering research and recommendations to other ethical views (such as risk aversion and short-term preferences) may benefit the EA climate sphere. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱'𝘀 𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁? 🏗 Cement is responsible for 7% of global CO₂ emissions. 40% comes from demand for heat in the production process, which can be solved by finding cleaner heat sources. The other half, however, comes directly from the process itself: the chemical reaction that produces a core ingredient of cement (calcium oxide), also produces CO₂. How do we avoid these emissions. ⬇ Option 1: Use less cement. By building less stuff, or by reducing the amount cement in concrete. 🏭 Option 2: Catch the CO₂ emissions at the end of the chain, using carbon capture and storage. 🤘 Option 3: Use a different source rock (such as calcium silicate) to produce cement without CO₂ as a by-product.
