𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 are getting smaller and smaller. In the top left picture, a gold bond wire soldered to a contact (green arrow) and a human hair (red arrow) are shown to illustrate the size of the entire contact. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀 and you want to understand why? Our experts can make a cross-section exactly through the soldered bond wire by mechanical polishing. Additional chemical etching enables us to visualize the 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲 of the problem: a 𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸 in the lower part of the bond wire (yellow arrow).

We are pleased to introduce Sebastiaan Soto, a graduate intern from Fontys University of Applied Sciences . During his internship, Sebastiaan will develop and optimize sample preparation procedures that enable accurate determination of the composition of 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝘄𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲, such as smartphones and printed circuit boards. His research focuses on refining the shredding and milling processes for heterogeneous e-waste to produce samples that are consistent, homogeneous, and representative, which is essential for reliable and reproducible analysis. Analytical techniques such as 𝗫𝗥𝗙, 𝗜𝗖𝗣-𝗢𝗘𝗦, 𝗜𝗖𝗣-𝗠𝗦, and 𝗜𝗚𝗔 (𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝘀) will be utilized to detect and quantify (critical) elements and impurities. The goal is to build a strong foundation with improved preparation and analysis methodologies. In this way, we hope to contribute to technologies that promote the recovery of valuable materials from electronic waste and advance more sustainable practices in the future.

The origin of stains on ceramic surfaces... In ceramics, small amounts of contaminations and/or additives can influence the characteristics of the material. Sometimes (local) discolorations/stains appear after processing. Because ceramics are non-conducting and hard to dissolve, analyses by using wet chemical analyses or by most surface analysis techniques are difficult. Using laser ablation ICP-MS, a semi-quantitative survey analysis can be made to determine the elemental composition at specific positions on the ceramic material. Because of the high linear dynamic range, main constituents and trace impurities (down to µg/g levels) can be detected at once without the need of sample preparation. If contaminants are present in depth, depth profiling analyses can be performed. For challenging sample shapes or surfaces, cross-sectioning can create easy access. By scanning the laser laterally over the cross section from the surface towards the bulk of the material, the distribution of contaminants or additives can be studied. More information about laser ablation ICP-MS and its capabilities can be found on our website https://lnkd.in/g3KJKq9g or you can contact Merel van Heeswijk.

Defects in a coating: sometimes the root cause for coating irregularities lies below the surface. This video illustrates how Focused Ion Beam milling can be applied to reveal sub-micron defects beneath the surface….digging to find the root cause. Thanks to our FIB expert Hans Bolten for the great video. #failureanalysis

We welcome Carlijn Fransen, a trainee from Summa College, to our Cleanliness Qualification team! In the coming months, Carlijn will classify the air cleanliness of parts and modules for the high-tech industry according to ISO 14644. Utilizing light scattering airborne particle counters, she will analyze release of particles ranging from 0,1 µm to over 5 µm from the devices under test. We wish Carlijn a positive and enriching experience during her internship!

Temperature-shock testing is a useful method for identifying potential failure mechanisms in a product, especially when used alongside post-mortem product analysis. Here, we show optical microscopy images of two cross-sections, made exactly through solder joints. Cracks running through the solder joint are well recognizable. This indicates that the solder joints are the weakest link that will reduce the products lifespan. The outcome can be used to optimize its design and related processing.

Vacature..... Interesse? Neem dan snel contact met ons op! Voor meer details: https://lnkd.in/eTNQcMQR
