Our clients choose to invest in our Fairtrade International and/or Gold Standard carbon credits. But why should you invest in carbon credits like them and so many others? 𝗗𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 Nowadays, more and more customers (and employees!) are looking at the sustainability ambitions of companies. If you can demonstrate that you are actively reducing your CO2 emissions and investing in climate projects that benefit people who are most affected by climate change, you create a positive image for your company. 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗹𝗮𝘄𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 In 2022, the European Union adopted the CSRD law. The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive requires companies to report on the impact of their activities on people and the environment. Currently, the CSRD only applies to large companies with more than 50 million in turnover per year, but from January 2026, it will also apply to SMEs. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹𝘀 In addition to the above arguments, you can also have a moral ambition to contribute to the climate goals and to maintain or reduce the 1.5 degree global warming. Keep in mind that carbon credits are just one tool in a climate strategy, complementing the essential first step of reducing emissions within your own value chain. As we go through another summer, it's important to remember that the heatwaves we're dealing with are just a small part of what countries like Chad face. Chad stands as the second most vulnerable country in the world to the consequences of climate change. The country endures extreme droughts that devastate agriculture and livelihoods. Additionally, there are currently more than 1.2 million refugees living in Chad, a number that is increasing due to the escalating civil war in neighboring Sudan. The refugee camps are located in a very dry region where little wood is available. To address this, our current project has already distributed 9,000 solar cookers, providing a sustainable solution for cooking needs. This summer, as we cope with rising temperatures, let's also raise awareness and support for those who are on the frontlines of this global crisis. ❣ We are looking for investements to help 10,000 additional families. We signed the Foundation Development and Climate Alliance position paper, highlighting the importance of high-quality climate protection projects as part of holistic climate protection strategies. ✍ Our common goal is to support companies in the creation and implementation of their holistic and long-term climate protection strategies, channeling private capital into high quality projects in the Global South. By adopting a holistic climate protection strategy, companies ensure their own future viability while also safeguarding the planet by: ✔️Implementing an ambitious strategy that prioritizes the avoidance and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. ✔️Reducing emissions along their own value chain and investing in carbon credits for greenhouse gas emissions that have not yet been avoided. ✔️Making financial contributions to climate protection projects, not based on one’s own emissions balance, to be active outside their own value chain. Join us on a trip to Rwanda: Our Marketing Communications Officer, Lisanne van Essen, departed to Rwanda in the past weeks. Together with Rwanda-based Project Manager, Evelien Lambooij, and accompanied by local filming and photography company, Arthur Nation Ltd, they explored various locations. 🇷🇼 FairClimateFund, BioMassters, Mimi Moto, BIX Capital and TRAIDE Foundation, together have formed the partnership ‘Partners in Pellets’. This partnership has a clean cooking project set up, using pellets and Tier-4 gas stoves. The pellets are made from waste materials, such as sawdust. The materials are compressed into small cylinders. The pellet market and the use of clean cookstoves help households of various income levels and SMEs, such as small restaurants. 👨👩👧👧In Kigali, interviews were conducted with 4 households and 1 restaurant owner regarding the benefits of clean cooking. The women emphasized that pellet cooking is significantly safer and more cost-effective. 🏬They also visited Biomasssters Store, our local partner, where households can obtain pellet stoves and cooking pellets, and where cooking demonstrations are regularly held. 👩🏭In Gisenyi, they visited a pellet factory where local sawdust is transformed into cylinders for cooking pellets, promoting job opportunities and supporting a circular economy.  Throughout the trip, Arthur Nation captured valuable content that the marketing team can utilize across all communication channels. 𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗻 𝘂𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗴𝗮𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗨𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮 Biogas Solutions Uganda Limited (BSUL) is our local partner in Uganda. They have been working on the maintenance of biodigesters and biogas stoves. They organised a training for new biodigester owners and continued their impressive repair campaign. Early 2023, two FairClimateFund colleagues, Director Neera van der Geest and Business Developer Climate Projects Harry Clemens visited the project in Uganda. However, the biogas project is currently facing challenges with the verification process of newly reported biodigesters. Nevertheless, in the meantime, the new users will still be able to reduce carbon emissions and experience a cleaner way of cooking, which will also improve their health. If your plans involve flying to a distant location, take the time to calculate your CO2 flight emissions using our CO2 calculator. You then invest in fair climate projects that reduce CO2 emissions elsewhere and contribute to better living conditions for people who are most vulnerable to the consequences of climate change. 𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗻 𝘂𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝘂𝗴𝗲𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗱 The impact of the project continues to rise, with a remarkable time-saving of 38 hours per week! However last year, the Solar Cooker project was confronted with an urgent need for the expansion of solar cookers due to the outbreak of a new conflict in Darfur in April. The challenges faced by these refugees are compounded by a severe shortage of fuel for cooking and cooking utensils. In response, our local partner redirected efforts towards constructing housing facilities for the new arrivals.     This still is a big challenge and efforts are needed.
