    FEM of the month This month we’re diving into an explosion simulation inside a standard 20-foot shipping container. The TNT explosion is simulated using the blast load functionality in Altair Radioss. The goal is to demonstrate how Radioss can be used to predict the effect of an explosion on a structure. The software provides 3 different types of explosions: · Free Air · Ground Reflection · Air Burst The setup simplifies the air blast pressure calculation because the arrival time and incident pressure are not adjusted for obstacles. Confinement of the explosion and ground effects are also neglected. A free air explosion without ground reflection is used for the current simulation. The air blast pressure is determined by the software using the semi-empirical (modified) Friedlander model, which has been determined by fitting to experimental data. Only the detonation point, affected surfaces and equivalent TNT mass must be provided to set-up the simulation. The air blast pressure used in the simulation is equivalent to that of a one-kilogram TNT explosion.   An elastic-plastic material model with failure is used to model the behaviour of the Corten steel (common for shipping containers) of the container. 3D shell elements and 1D beam elements are used to model the container. The bottom of the container is constrained in the vertical direction. The video shows the deformation of the container as well as the blast pressure on the container walls. #fem #explosion #simulation #engineering #femto #weenableinnovation

    CFD Tuesday - Wintery condensation in birdhouses   As the days shorten and the temperatures drop, we can encounter fogged up windows and damp walls. This is due to condensation. As the air cools, it can contain less water. When the humidity rises to 100%, the water vapour will change back into liquid form   This week we take a look at a simple approach to determine if condensation occurs within a building. Our building of choice is this lovely luxury birdhouse.  Luxury because this birdhouse has a floor which is equipped with a heater, delivering a constant 3W of heat to the bird-house.  In this video we show you the temperature and condensation within the bird-house on a cold winter day in February. Although we did add a solar-load, this load is so small in winter that it barely has any effect on the temperature within the bird-house. As you can see the humidity significantly reduces during the day, when the temperature increases (especially within the bird-house thanks to the heater).  When the temperature drops at night, the humidity will increase again. In this case the relative humidity does not reach levels above 100%, thus we can conclude that no condensation will be present within this bird-house. It will thus be a dry and comfortable place of living even in the death of winter (but as a note to the birds: bring a warm blanket)! Of course, this is a cheeky example of something that can occur within loads of different type of geometries. Especially within places where the humidity is high even at higher temperatures, condensation can become a problem when walls cool down due to wintery temperatures. #cfd #engineering #birdhouses #temperatures #simulation #weenableinnovation

    CFD Tuesday - Fluid Structure Interaction Femto is originally a company specializing in Finite Element Method for structural analysis, and in the present day we also perform flow analyses using CFD. This week's CFD tuesday post combines the two specialisms to show fluid and structural analysis in harmony   Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) is a method within CFD where you couple fluid simulations with structural simulations.  In this case we have two examples, in one air flows over a flexible Femto-logo, which then moves due to the wind. The oscillation is caused by the force: It decreases as the logo flexes, which causes the logo to flex back again.  In the other example, a water jet hits a flexible metal plate, causing the same effect. Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) is very useful for a wide variety of problems: Anywhere where the fluid flow has a direct effect on the deformation of the structure, which in turn has an effect on the fluid flow, can be simulated using this method. #femto #engineering #cfd #simulation #fsi #weenableinnovation

    CFD Tuesday - Water on a column of particles A few weeks ago we posted a video about what happens when you drop a tonne of liquid on a bed of particles.  We determined that we did not have enough particles to properly answer the questions we asked that time: "do you need 2-way or 1-way coupling on the Discrete Element Method (DEM) particles and water to model this"   Therefore, in this example we dropped the column of liquid on a lot more particles. We used Simcenter STAR CCM+ to fill the bottom of the tank about 3/4th with particles using the Discrete Element Method (DEM). After letting them settle we released the liquid so that it drops on top of the particles.  In this example we are still using 1-way coupling, however we can now determine if this method works, or if we need to go to a 2-way coupled model (at the cost of much more computational power).
