Over ons
Mission and Vision: The Free Yezidi Foundation (FYF) supports the Yezidi community in the aftermath of the 2014 Yezidi Genocide. FYF promotes the rights and well-being of Yezidis in Iraq and the diaspora, with an emphasis on women’s empowerment, the pursuit of justice, and helping the community rebuild through trauma treatment, education, training, and economic development. Why we work with Yezidis In August 2014, the so-called Islamic State carried out a genocide against the Yezidi ethno-religious minority in Iraq, resulting in mass killings, forced conversations, enslavement of over 6,000 Yezidi women and children, displacement of over 400,000 Yezidis, and destruction of the Yezidi homeland of Sinjar. Almost a decade later, the community continues to suffer the impact of the genocide, with nearly half the population still internally displaced, over 2,600 Yezidis still missing or in captivity, and a lack of basic resources and infrastructure in Sinjar. The community needs holistic and tangible support to rebuild, recover, and establish resiliency. Why we work with women FYF operates under the principle that there are no human rights without women’s rights. FYF empowers Yezidi women to combat gender-based discrimination and violence against women and girls within Yezidi society, as well as broader Iraq society. FYF is women-led and attaches great importance to working with women from other communities, particularly minority and vulnerable groups in Iraq. Through its programming and internal policies and procedures, FYF builds the capacity of Yezidi and other minority women to become leaders in their communities. FYF integrates gender equity principles into its operations and human resources practices, reflecting its organizational values of promoting the rights of women and girls. FYF’s success will include the development and advancement of Yezidi and other minority women beneficiaries to serve as changemakers and community leaders.

For decades, the Yezidi community in Iraq has faced deep-rooted marginalization, compounded by conflict and displacement. Today, many Yezidis continue to struggle with poverty, lacking access to basic resources that are essential for rebuilding their lives. Post-conflict displacement has left thousands without stable homes, jobs, or adequate civic services. To sustainably uplift Yezidis and empower them to break free from the cycle of poverty, it is crucial that displaced and returnee families have access to long-term housing, meaningful job opportunities, and essential services like healthcare, education, and infrastructure. On this day, we renew our commitment to ensuring that no one is left behind. Together, we can support the Yezidi community in their journey toward recovery, dignity, and empowerment. #EndPoverty #YezidiCommunity #RebuildingLives #HousingForAll #JobOpportunities #CivicServices #FreeYezidiFoundation

Today, we highlight the urgent need for food security and sustainable/regenerative agriculture practices in Iraq, where the Yezidi community and other vulnerable groups are deeply affected by the devastating impacts of climate change. Extreme weather patterns, water scarcity, and rising temperatures are threatening the livelihoods of farmers and the availability of food for many. For communities already struggling to recover from conflict and displacement, the added pressure of climate change is making it harder to access nutritious and affordable food. On this #WorldFoodDay, let’s stand in solidarity with those fighting for food security and take action to ensure that no one is left behind in the battle against hunger. #SustainableAgriculture #FoodSecurity #ClimateAction #YezidiCommunity #Iraq #FreeYezidiFoundation

On this World Mental Health Day, we’re spotlighting the incredible work of the FYF Protection Team, who are dedicated to providing comprehensive mental health care to vulnerable community members. Through individual and group therapy, case management, and recreational activities like trauma recovery yoga and arts and crafts, our team helps survivors of genocide, conflict-related sexual violence, and domestic violence heal and thrive. We also offer psychoeducation sessions and raise mental health awareness to break down stigmas around seeking care. Our work doesn’t stop there. We conduct rights awareness sessions, engage men in anger management and positive masculinity workshops, and deliver life-saving prevention sessions on SGBV and child marriage. Together, we’re creating a future where mental health is understood, supported, and prioritized for all. #MentalHealthMatters #BreakingStigmas #HealingTogether #WorldMentalHealthDay #FreeYezidiFoundation

Recently, they organized a special day full of sports, arts, and fun for the children at Essian IDP camp. The students' community projects are all about uplifting and giving back to their fellow community members, bringing joy and creating positive experiences beyond camp life. Together, we aim to support the children's mental well-being and provide a creative outlet where they can express themselves freely. After years of brutal enslavement in Gaza, a #Yezidi girl has been rescued and reunited with her family in Iraq. Kidnapped at the age of 11, her story is just one among many. Thousands of Yezidi women and girls remain enslaved by ISIS and extremist groups across the Middle East, with over 2,600 still unaccounted for. #SaveYezidiWomen #YezidiGenocide

Next week, from October 6-13, Yezidis will gather at the sacred Lalish Temple to celebrate Jama Feast, one of the oldest and most cherished Yezidi holidays. This week-long celebration unites Yezidis from around the world, featuring special rituals, festive meals, and traditional religious dances. After being paused for years following the tragic Yezidi Genocide in 2014, Jama resumed in 2018, symbolizing the resilience and enduring spirit of the Yezidi community. Join us in celebrating the revival of our traditions and the unity that defines our people! #YezidiCulture #YezidiReligion #Lalish #FreeYezidiFoundation
