𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐨𝐧𝐲'𝐬 𝐂𝐡𝐨𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐥𝐲 By: Jorein Hendriksen In 2003, Dutch journalist Teun van de Keuken, known for the TV show ‘Keuringsdienst van Waarde', made a documentary about the injustices in the cocoa industry. To his dismay, he discovered that his beloved chocolate is often made with illegal child labor and modern slavery in West Africa, despite Fairtrade certification. Shocked by the inequality and exploitation, he decides to make chocolate himself that is produced fairly and sustainably. Thus, Tony's Chocolonely is born.

Ever wondered how AI could change the way we work? Last month, my colleague Wander and I had the opportunity to explore this question with our team at ftrprf. We hosted two interactive workshops, where we explored how AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini can make our work more effective. It was not just about sharing info—it was a lot of fun seeing our colleagues get hands-on with AI and see the excitement around what’s possible. We dove into practical strategies for effective prompt writing and doing research, ensuring clear and relevant output. Our colleagues walked away with a deeper understanding of AI’s potential, risks, and practical experience that they can apply in their work. We are continuously learning and reflecting on the use of AI in our work, and how it can make our work more impactful. Curious about how to improve your prompt writing skills? Have a look at our tips for effective prompt writing by checking out the guide linked below. Feel free to share your thoughts and experiences with AI in your work!

Dutch pension funds are leading the charge towards a sustainable future! On October 26, 2021, ABP, the largest pension fund in the Netherlands, announced it would stop investing in fossil fuels. This bold move was driven by alarming reports from the International Energy Agency (IEA) and IPCC about global warming. Instead, ABP is increasing its investments in renewable energy and smart solutions for the energy transition, ensuring a livable world for future generations. Following suit, Pensioenfonds Zorg & Welzijn (PFZW) launched a robust engagement program with oil and gas companies, pushing for cleaner energy production. It sets clear goals and milestones, combined with tight deadlines and consequences for not making (timely) progress. By February 8, 2024, PFZW had sold interests in 310 companies that failed to meet sustainability goals. Pension funds like Pensioenfonds ABP and PFZW are investing in groundbreaking projects like H2 Green Steel, ultra-fast charging stations, and sustainable heat networks. Together, they have allocated €10 billion for Dutch impact investments, setting the stage for a massive energy transition in the Netherlands. The five largest Dutch pension funds have now united, offering billions to the Dutch government to ensure long-term sustainability projects. It is up to the government to ensure that a sustainable relationship emerges from this. If that succeeds, the Netherlands will take a big step forward.

Recently, a director told us about going on a 'customer safari' with the board to engage with 'ordinary customers.' This highlights a disconnect. Many directors are out of touch with their customers, leading to a gap where the 'common person’ feels unheard and directors misunderstood. Trust in institutions is low, and society is increasingly vocal about policies and management. Directors need to move beyond token gestures and genuinely engage with diverse perspectives. Bring the outside world in with a structured, permanent approach and give those perspectives a place at the strategic table.

This question led to the establishment of i+solutions, a Dutch non-profit organization that provides access to affordable healthcare products for low- and middle-income countries. i+solutions purchases essential medicines on behalf of The Global Fund and other donor organizations, such as Stop TB Partnership and the Clinton Health Access Initiative. In 2022, i+ contributed to the delivery of HIV treatments for over 4.6 million patients and malaria treatments for 166 million patients. Since last year, they have also started providing tuberculosis treatments for millions of patients worldwide. With over 100 employees, i+ is responsible for the procurement and logistics of medicines to more than 120 countries.

How will AI affect your organization? What does AI do for leadership, strategy, ethics, employees, efficiency, and effectiveness? Which AI topics should be on the CEO’s agenda? Vistage Worldwide, Inc., the world’s largest organization for coaching and intervention for CEOs, is planning a two-day EMEA summit about the disruptive impact of AI on CEOs. We talked about it with Harm Mannak, the CEO of Vistage Benelux B.V. And that was so inspiring that we couldn’t resist writing a page about it in Het Financieele Dagblad. If you are a CEO, you might want to read https://lnkd.in/eEBdESvm #AI #Vistage #CEO #summit #Noordereiland #ftrprf #futureproof

The possibilities that AI offers seem to be limitless. While the opportunities it provides are impressive, it is essential to remain aware of the potential threats and dangers. Issues such as discriminatory facial recognition, racist chatbots, and self-driving cars that disproportionately harm people of color raise important questions: “Is AI connected to inequality?” Philosopher Ajuna Soerjadi sheds light on the conditions necessary for the ethical implementation of AI. Ajuna Soerjadi - at just 23 years old - has made remarkable strides in the field of data ethics, focusing on the impact of AI on equality and inclusion. Her work at the Expertise Center for Data Ethics assists government agencies in navigating the AI revolution, emphasizing the importance of diversity and inclusion in STEM. Inspired by the Dutch Childcare Benefits scandal, Soerjadi questions how data collection reflects societal inequalities. She believes AI can both promote and hinder equality—for example, increasing the mobility of people with disabilities and detecting racism, while also perpetuating biases due to non-representative datasets. Soerjadi identifies the biggest challenge as a lack of awareness about inclusion in AI. To drive meaningful innovation, inclusion must be prioritized. She advocates for a collective responsibility model, where CEOs, governments, educators, and policymakers play crucial roles in ensuring ethical AI practices. She calls for ethical committees, education on AI ethics, and comprehensive assessments like the Impact Assessment Human Rights and Algorithms (IAMA). Soerjadi envisions a future where AI is leveraged not just for efficiency but for creating a society where everyone thrives. At ftrprf, we are intentional about ethical innovation. We always ask ourselves the question: “To what end?” Equal and equitable innovation, for everyone. Shall we?
