📄 In light of the ongoing case of Gisèle Pelicot, Global Human Rights Defence’s Women’s Rights Team Coordinator Idil Igdir illuminates the issue of legal accountability concerning rape in France. This report provides an analysis of the international legal obligations the French system should comply with, as well as an analysis of the extent to which it actually does. At the center of this analysis is the distinction between force-based definitions of rape on the one hand, and consent-based definitions on the other. The report concludes with a list of recommendations for French policy makers. “The persistence of a force-based definition of rape within the French Penal Code presents significant obstacles for victims in proving their cases, resulting in a justice system that often fails to adequately protect victims or ensure accountability for perpetrators.“ (p. 28) “The case of Gisèle Pelicot starkly illustrates this pressing need for reform, as her resolute stand against a legal system steeped in victim-blaming culture underscores the imperative for a legal framework that truly reflects the lived realities of women.“ (p. 29) 👇 Read the full report below! #HumanRights #WomensRights #Report #Law #InternationalLaw #Justice #Rape #France #GHRD

GHRD is an international human rights organization, working to promote the rights of minorities globally
Over ons
Global Human Rights Defence (GHRD) is an international human rights organization which focuses specifically on those areas and populations of the world where severe and extensive human rights violations have continued unabated over long periods of time and where structural help and global attention of governments, international institutions and the media have failed to reach. GHRD operates through three main pillars: human rights reporting, humanitarian aid and human rights education (in the region, the Netherlands and throughout Europe). The mission of GHRD is to actively promote the respect for human rights, with specific emphasis on the rights of minority and marginalized groups, such as religious, ethnic, linguistic and sexual minorities, as well as women and children and to form an international platform to inform, influence and demand efforts from the relevant organizations and authorities.

Mariana (Chairperson, left), Sophie (Vice-Chair, middle), and Kim (Youth Ambassador, right) talked to various impressive individuals to spread the word of the NGUN project. We have received a lot of positive feedback as well as input on how we can further improve our program. The importance of including diverse young voices in global decision-making processes was at the center of our discussions. 🌟 The main event of the NGUN project will take place from May 14 to May 16, 2025. We will invite around 200 participants from the ages of 18-30 to the Peace Palace in The Hague, the city of peace and justice, to learn about and discuss human rights issues of global significance. The NGUN Team is committed to cooperate with a variety of actors, including but not limited to individuals operating within the UN and programs of the UN, to ensure that the perspectives of our participants will be considered far beyond the halls of our iconic venue. 📄Global Human Rights Defence and EFR proudly present the results of the Involve Consultancy Project 2023/2024! This #report deals with the recognition of the 1971 Bangladesh Genocide, supporting GHRD’s Bangladesh Campaign. The students worked on this important paper over the course of the last year. „The history of Bangladesh is complex and multi-faceted, however, it is not well known among Western countries. Especially the events of the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War are often overlooked. Mention of this critical event in the history of Bangladesh often leaves out the consequences and aftermaths which affect current events. It must be questioned why the events of the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War have not been recognised as a genocide and if a re-evaluation is required. Not only could recognition serve as moral justice for the people of Bangladesh, it could also improve Western media’s reporting on the country of Bangladesh. An improved portrayal of the events of the Bangladesh Liberation War may results in increased economic activity, for example, by means of investor confidence or more accurate views of (Western) policy makers.“ 👉 Read the full report below! #HumanRights #Research #Genocide #Bangladesh #MediaBias #History #Insights #GHRD
