GHRD is an international human rights organization, working to promote the rights of minorities globally

Over ons

Global Human Rights Defence (GHRD) is an international human rights organization which focuses specifically on those areas and populations of the world where severe and extensive human rights violations have continued unabated over long periods of time and where structural help and global attention of governments, international institutions and the media have failed to reach. GHRD operates through three main pillars: human rights reporting, humanitarian aid and human rights education (in the region, the Netherlands and throughout Europe). The mission of GHRD is to actively promote the respect for human rights, with specific emphasis on the rights of minority and marginalized groups, such as religious, ethnic, linguistic and sexual minorities, as well as women and children and to form an international platform to inform, influence and demand efforts from the relevant organizations and authorities.

  • 📄Global Human Rights Defence and EFR proudly present the results of the Involve Consultancy Project 2023/2024! This #report deals with the recognition of the 1971 Bangladesh Genocide, supporting GHRD’s Bangladesh Campaign. The students worked on this important paper over the course of the last year. „The history of Bangladesh is complex and multi-faceted, however, it is not well known among Western countries. Especially the events of the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War are often overlooked. Mention of this critical event in the history of Bangladesh often leaves out the consequences and aftermaths which affect current events. It must be questioned why the events of the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War have not been recognised as a genocide and if a re-evaluation is required. Not only could recognition serve as moral justice for the people of Bangladesh, it could also improve Western media’s reporting on the country of Bangladesh. An improved portrayal of the events of the Bangladesh Liberation War may results in increased economic activity, for example, by means of investor confidence or more accurate views of (Western) policy makers.“ 👉 Read the full report below! #HumanRights #Research #Genocide #Bangladesh #MediaBias #History #Insights #GHRD

  • 📄 Today, Global Human Rights Defences’s Women’s Rights Team highlights the dire situation of Afghan women facing gender apartheid under Taliban Rule. This report explains the historical context of women’s rights in Afghanistan, illuminates the legal landscape before and under Taliban rule, illustrates the challenges Afghan women face today, and explores the international response to Taliban imposed gender apartheid. Throughout this paper, the resilience of Afghan women in the face of constant, pervasive, and soul crushing discrimination is highlighted. Interview data with a female Afghan lawyer enriches this report with a firsthand perspective. "Through the lens of a firsthand witness, Ms. A. states that even though women in Afghanistan are trying to resist the Taliban’s restrictions in multiple ways, particularly through protests, they are often prevented by gunfire, torture, and imprisonment by the Taliban" (p. 18) "[T]he strong spirit of Afghan women stands out as a sign of hope. Even with huge obstacles, they keep fighting for their rights, speaking out for their freedom, and bringing people together both in Afghanistan and around the world. The support from Afghans living abroad and groups working for the cause, along with help from other countries, is very important in this struggle, providing support, resources, and awareness across borders" (p. 23) "As the world watches and helps in this journey, the hope for a fairer and more just future for Afghan women shines brightly, reminding us of the ongoing fight for freedom and dignity that connects us all" (p. 23) Read the full report below! #HumanRights #WomensRights #MinorityRights #Report #Afghanistan #GenderApartheid #GHRD

📄 This report delves into the heavy topic of rape as a weapon of genocidal war in the context of the 1971 Bangladesh Genocide. Despite the brutality of gendered wartime violence, the role that women have played in the liberation of Bangladesh has received little international and academic attention. Therefore, Global Human Rights Defence “aims to shed light on the intersection gender, power and violence” that characterized the Bangladesh Genocide. This paper is divided into three sections: 👉 An explanation of rape as a weapon of genocidal war and how this concept applies to the Bangladesh Liberation War. 👉 The contribution of women to the cause of a free Bangladesh despite the grave violence they faced.  👉 The importance of recognition and remembrance. Global Human Rights Defence has been campaigning for the official recognition of the 1971 Bangladesh Genocide since October 2023. • 📄 This report by Global Human Rights Defence’s South and Southeast Asia Team highlights the struggles of Internally Displaced People (IDPs) and explains the international legal framework for their protection. There is no legally binding treaty protecting IDPs, however “some branches of public international law could provide limited protection to IDPs” (p. 4). This protection is essential due to the vulnerability of this group to various adverse impacts of displacement, as explained in this paper. To illustrate potential causes of internal displacement, the authors discuss three case studies: Myanmar, Nepal, and India. „As conflict persists, climate change intensifies, and development projects expand, the number of IDPs continues to rise. These individuals are often thrust into precarious conditions, lacking adequate shelter, access to healthcare, and livelihood opportunities. The absence of comprehensive legal frameworks tailored specifically to IDPs exacerbates their vulnerability, leaving them reliant on piecemeal protections offered through soft law instruments and human rights treaties. Addressing internal displacement is crucial not only for humanitarian reasons, but also for ensuring sustainable development and global stability“ (p. 3).
