GHRD is an international human rights organization, working to promote the rights of minorities globally

Over ons

Global Human Rights Defence (GHRD) is an international human rights organization which focuses specifically on those areas and populations of the world where severe and extensive human rights violations have continued unabated over long periods of time and where structural help and global attention of governments, international institutions and the media have failed to reach. GHRD operates through three main pillars: human rights reporting, humanitarian aid and human rights education (in the region, the Netherlands and throughout Europe). The mission of GHRD is to actively promote the respect for human rights, with specific emphasis on the rights of minority and marginalized groups, such as religious, ethnic, linguistic and sexual minorities, as well as women and children and to form an international platform to inform, influence and demand efforts from the relevant organizations and authorities.

  • 📄 This report delves into the heavy topic of rape as a weapon of genocidal war in the context of the 1971 Bangladesh Genocide. Despite the brutality of gendered wartime violence, the role that women have played in the liberation of Bangladesh has received little international and academic attention. Therefore, Global Human Rights Defence “aims to shed light on the intersection gender, power and violence” that characterized the Bangladesh Genocide. This paper is divided into three sections: 👉 An explanation of rape as a weapon of genocidal war and how this concept applies to the Bangladesh Liberation War. 👉 The contribution of women to the cause of a free Bangladesh despite the grave violence they faced.  👉 The importance of recognition and remembrance. Global Human Rights Defence has been campaigning for the official recognition of the 1971 Bangladesh Genocide since October 2023. • 🌟 The Launch of the New Generation Uniting Nations project has been a success! We extend our gratitude to everyone who joined us at Café Soof in The Hague to explore what this exciting youth initiative is about. Together, we were able to discuss the importance of involving young voices in global decision-making processes of the international human rights system, and to explore how this project can help bridge the gap between our youth and international institutions like the United Nations and the European Union. A special thank you goes out to former Dutch MP Harry van Bommel who has joined the Board of Recommendations of the New Generation Uniting Nations project. 🌐 The Project in a nutshell Young voices are often missing when global powers make decisions that will have immense effects on the present and future of young people, especially those of marginalized and minority youth. The mission of the New Generation Uniting Nations project is to empower young voices and strengthen the representation of their diverse perspectives in international decision-making processes. For that purpose, we will invite around 250 young individuals from various backgrounds to come together at the Peace Palace in The Hague, the city of peace and justice. Together, they will learn from experts and discuss their views on a range of subjects relevant to the international human rights system. Global Human Rights Defence will make sure the perspectives of these young changemakers will reach the international stage! 👉 Visit the NGUN website for more information: https://ngun.global/ 👀 Stay tuned for updates on the New Generation Uniting Nations Project! There will be various ways to engage with this initiative. #HumanRights #Youth #YoungVoices #MinorityRights #Event #Project #Empowerment #Activism #Launch #TheHague #GHRD

  • 📄 45% of abortions worldwide are classified as unsafe, often leading to the death of affected women. Especially in the face of backlash against feminist progress, the topic of abortion rights is as relevant as ever. Addressing this issue, the report “Conquering the Right to Abortion – The French Journey on Women’s Access to Abortion” illuminates the constitutionalisation of abortion rights in France. This recent event constitutes a milestone in the history of reproductive rights and is celebrated as a major success by those activists who have fought tirelessly for the right to abortion. However, the phrasing of the law also warrants criticism. „The wording chosen by Parliament remains highly restrictive, granting a simple freedom to undergo an abortion, whose conditions still depend on Parliament’s choices, and solely granted to women, rather than establishing an untouchable universal human right” (p. 15) „Is French constitutionalisation a good thing? Yes, without a doubt. The symbolism it holds and the example it sets for the world is unparalleled because incorporating abortion into the Constitution, whether as a "right" or "freedom," does not prevent new laws from enriching it. Having already constitutionalised the idea that this right exists, that women can have this freedom of access to abortion is a huge victory. A victory for France, but above all for women from all around the world. But one thing is sure, there are still many battles left to fight. And protecting abortion rights remains one of them“ (p. 18) 👇 Read the full report below #HumanRights #WomensRights #AbortionRights #ReproductiveRights #ReproductiveHealth #MinorityRights #Report #France #Law #GHRD
