🌱 Jay's Fight for Justice: A Community's Stand Against Environmental Negligence 🌱 In South Sumatra, Indonesia, eleven residents, including Jay from Lebung Itam village, have bravely filed a lawsuit against three plantation companies: PT Bumi Mekar Hijau, PT Bumi Andalas Permai, and PT Sebangun Bumi Andalas Wood Industries. These companies, long-time suppliers to the agribusiness conglomerate Sinar Mas, are accused of contributing to the chronic smoke haze that has devastated local communities. The plaintiffs are not just seeking compensation for the loss of a healthy environment, but also highlighting the severe health and economic impacts caused by repeated peatland fires. These fires have disrupted daily lives—whether it’s farming, fishing, or just breathing safely. With over 254,787 hectares of land burned, nearly four times the size of Jakarta, communities continue to suffer from these preventable disasters. Jay and his fellow villagers are standing strong, demanding accountability and their right to a livable, safe environment. Their story is a powerful reminder of how communities can come together to challenge environmental negligence. With the UN Biodiversity COP16 kicking off next week, it's more important than ever to push for an end to the funding of environmental destruction and ensure the fulfilment of targets 14, 15, and 18 of the Global Biodiversity Framework.
