Their innovative solution uses a smartphone camera to detect atrial fibrillation (AFib), a condition that increases stroke risk fivefold. With over 30% of AFib cases going undetected—impacting more than 14 million people in the EU and 7 million in the US—Happitech’s mission is to address this critical gap. Happitech's CE-registered, Class 2a Medical Device utilizes advanced PPG technology, delivering accurate AFib screening in just 90 seconds, without requiring any additional hardware. Currently, the company monitors over 30,000 AFib patients in hospitals across the UK and the Netherlands. Through strategic partnerships, they’ve reached over 500,000 unique users across 11 countries, supported by 13 clinical studies that validate their approach. Happitech is now embarking on one of the largest cardiac monitoring studies in the Netherlands, aiming to screen over 160,000 patients in collaboration with major medical device companies, pharmaceutical firms, and cardiology associations. HRX 2024 has officially come to a close, marking three incredible days where cutting-edge medical device innovations and advancements in cardiology intersected. The event brought together leading experts who shared valuable insights on regulatory pathways, AI integration, implementation strategies, and clinical workflows—paving the way for the future of healthcare. Can #PPG Provide Actionable Physiologic Information? Great insights from an expert panel hosted by Hamid Ghanbari Quality models in PPG *output* will make all the difference in whether that data is useful. There is potential in diving further into PPG signals via AI to identify further physiologic information beyond simple arrhythmia detection. Standardization will be key in the future - Lars Grieten Some of the biggest challenges in PPG are in states of low perfusion, motion, low cardiac output. Continuous sensors need sophisticated components (ie automatic gain control / light emission) to overcome this. PPG & ECG are complimentary, and the ceiling is quite high for optical sensors and signal processing - Daniel Cantillon M.D. Algorithm and sensor development will rapidly develop over the next 5-10y. Signals from PPG are very robust, rich, but still a very peripheral signal susceptible to noise. Combo sensors will better optimize data, increasing specificity and context - Chris Lee Continuous is ideal, but if it is not available, spot checks can be complimentary and maybe more scalable; only the ubiquitous smartphone is needed. PPG is still a different language not everyone speaks, but as it is further deployed and studied it will be better understood, and applications will arise- Yosef Safi Harb False positives can be difficult to overcome with PPG. Also lower burden #AFib may be detected but may not be clinically relevant, as has been highlighted in recent AFib guidelines.
