💰 Finance is a challenge in most countries, with the justice sector struggling to deliver results. The Justice Action Coalition’s Workstream on Justice Financing aims to address these challenges with the Justice Financing Framework. 🎯 The Justice Financing Framework seeks to guide country-level justice financing, setting out financing principles, benchmarks, and ambitions to deliver #PeopleCenteredJustice. Its foundation is the 2019 Hague Declaration of Equal Access to Justice for All by 2030 and the OECD Recommendation on Access to Justice and People Centred Justice Systems. 💡 It draws inspiration from health and education sectors that have improved outcomes. ⚖️ Don’t miss out on our #SummitOfTheFuture side event, “Moving Towards a Financing Framework for People-Centered Justice,” to discuss effective financing for #justice and the proposed framework. 🌱 Co-sponsored by Canada 🇨🇦, The Kingdom of The Netherlands 🇳🇱, Sierra Leone 🇸🇱, and USAID, and co-organized by #JusticeActionCoalition, HiiL | User-friendly Justice, Pathfinders for Peaceful, Just and Inclusive Societies, ODI, OECD - OCDE, and UNDP. ‼️ RSVP for in-person attendance by September 16 at noon (ET)! 👇 https://lnkd.in/euKmsfMK 📁 Resources 👇 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eFmA6tjQ 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gdsr7ESn #SDG16Plus #JusticeForAll #AccessToJustice #OurCommonFuture #GlobalGoals

“There is no excuse not to use the data, research, and development and delivery-knowledge that is out there as the foundation for strategies to close the justice gap. There is no excuse not to invest in more data, more research, and more development and delivery-knowledge. There is no reason not to create experimentation and scaling space for new and better approaches to deliver justice services to people and SMEs. Putting people at the center.” Over the past weeks, HiiL’s CEO Sam Muller, has shared his reflections on Justice Future, Justice Past, and now concludes the series with Justice Present – the one that fills him with hope. Through Hein de Haas’s ‘How Migration Really Works’ and Beth Simone Noveck’s ‘Solving Public Problems’, Sam’s takeaway is clear: to close the #JusticeGap, we need less paperwork, more data, more action, and strategies designed with people at the centre. ⏰ It’s time for change. It’s time for #PeopleCentredJustice.
This summer holiday, I walked with Justice Future, Justice Past and Justice Present. Like a similar walk did with Ebenezer Scrooge before me, it opened my eyes. This is my last walk, with Justice Present. She gave me hope.

The second part of HiiL’s CEO, Sam Muller, series takes you on a journey through justice's past through the lens of art, history and written law. Read Sam’s insight into how society initiated the process of making the law more fair in a legal system that is resistant to change, sometimes with little success.
Earlier this week I told you about my walk with Justice Future. This week I will tell you about my walk with Justice Past.

“If justice systems don’t deliver they breed anger and resentment and become fertile ground for authoritarianism”. Our CEO, Sam Muller, shares his summer reading list and the powerful insights he gained. We invite you to read the first of this 3-part series and discover a different vision of justice systems through literature.
This summer holiday, I walked with Justice Future, Justice Past and Justice Present. Like a similar walk did with Ebenezer Scrooge before me, it opened my eyes. In the coming days I will share what they did with me. Here's the scariest one: Justice Future.

In Nigeria, the justice gap is not static—it grows and contracts over time. Our research shows that 184 million legal problems occur annually in Nigeria, and 67 million remain unresolved. Even when people find resolutions, some issues, like #LandDisputes, #DomesticViolence, and #NeighborConflicts, are likely to resurface. ✍️ Our study tracked individuals over three years, revealing that 19% of resolved problems re-emerged, often evolving into new issues. For example, a land dispute might lead to family conflicts, making it clear that we need durable solutions that address the root causes of these legal challenges. What’s striking is that 50% of Nigerians seek informal, amicable solutions with family, friends, or community leaders, while only 1% take their cases to court. This highlights the need for a people-centred justice strategy that prioritizes fast, fair resolutions through mediation and community-based approaches 🤝 Building a more just and inclusive society under #SDG16 means closing this justice gap. With ongoing legal issues affecting so many, innovative, sustainable solutions are essential to delivering justice for all. 🔗 Read the full report for more insights and recommendations: https://lnkd.in/ebyPXKZV HiiL Innovation Hub, West Africa

For the first time in Nigeria, our team, together with HiiL Innovation Hub, West Africa has implemented a unique research methodology that tracks the same individuals over three years to understand how their legal challenges evolve. 🔍 Our initial findings highlighted #land issues, #DomesticViolence, and #neighbour disputes as the most pressing problems. The second wave of data collection confirms these categories as the most serious, with those affected often facing recurring issues over time. 🎯 To truly address these challenges effectively, justice experts agree: we need #PeopleCentredJustice solutions.
