Policy, business and research in the field of #sustainable #carbon were discussed at the Dutch-Brazilian panel on Sustainable Carbon at the #BBEST IEA-Bioenergy Conference in São Paulo. Moderated by Jacqueline Vaessen, the panel sought to give insights into the different perspectives. From both the Brazilian and Dutch side, the full triple helix was invited, with representatives from the #private #sector, the #academic world and the #government. This resulted in interesting presentations, fruitful discussions and space for questions from the audience. During this session, we learned: 👉 how Raízen and Vertoro B.V. have shaped a concrete precedent for Dutch-Brazilian partnership in the private sector, which will result in better #valorization of #lignin streams; 👉 how the TU Delft and Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM) look at the big picture when they perform research, taking into account tradeoffs between #biodiversity, #water and #agricultural land use, and always considering the local context for the sustainable production of #biobased products; and lastly, 👉 how both the #Dutch and #Brazilian governments are aligning their policies, and prepare to collaborate in order to facilitate the transition to #biofuels and other biobased products, and make policies that will result in sustainable carbon value chains. Yesterday at the BBEST IEA-Bioenergy Conference in São Paulo, Robert Thijssen and Connie McManus announced the upcoming NWO (Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek) FAPESP call: #Integrated #biorefineries for a #circular #future. This bilateral R&D call will open next month and will give Dutch and Brazilian researchers an opportunity to jointly develop bilateral projects for the biorefineries of the future and receive funding! NWO (Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek) and FAPESP have a long history of collaboration and this is the first call that requires co-funding at the project level from one or more private companies that participate in the consortium, making it a truly #public-#private call. This facilitates translation of new technology to the private sector for scale up. With this call a next step is made in the strategy of the Netherlands to intensify the collaboration with Brazil in field of process technology and biorefinery. At the headquarters of dsm-firmenich in São Paulo, ChemistryNL and Brazilian Bioinnovation Association - ABBI signed an #MOU in the area of #biorefinery, in the presence of Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Aid Reinette Klever, which will result in an impactful partnership from a private sector perspective between Brazil and the Netherlands in the area of biorefinery and sustainable carbon for the energy transition. Both Brazil and the Netherlands are well positioned to make this transition to biobased feedstocks and to lead in innovations in this field, through strong agrifood and chemical sectors with innovative clusters on biochemistry and biorefinery. The importance of innovation in the field of biorefineries is crucial, and this MOU aims to stimulate the set-up of new bilateral R&D projects, exchange of expertise, private sector-government interaction and to involve participants from both organizations and their members. This MOU fits well in the context of existing Netherlands and Brazil STI-relations in the field of biorefinery, since the government-to-government MOU, namely the Joint Program of Collaboration on Science, Technology and Innovation has been signed during the Joint Committee Meeting between Ministerie van Economische Zaken, Ministerie van Onderwijs, Cultuur en Wetenschap and Ministério da Ciência, Tecnologia e Inovação last May in Brasília. Congratulations to ChemistryNL and Brazilian Bioinnovation Association - ABBI and good luck embarking on a shared journey of developing biobased streams for necessary #defossilization of the #chemical #industry. 🚗✈️🚢 The mobility sector plays a major role in the emission of greenhouse gases, and, like the Netherlands, Brazil is taking steps to decarbonize. Today Jens K. visited the conference of SAE BRASIL to look at the latest innovations. Brazil is already a few steps ahead of the Netherlands when it comes to biofuels. A hybrid bus running on bio-ethanol was presented by Marcopolo S.A. They also gave us a sneak-peak at the shiny bus in the back of the photo, which runs on hydrogen produced at USP - Universidade de São Paulo by Research Centre for Greenhouse Gas Innovation (RCGI) ‘s soon to open ethanol reform plant. When the plant opens and the bus starts running, you can expect a detailed report on this account. Speaking of reformers: Sabó works with a consortium of universities on a mobile reformer, that makes ethanol combustion more efficient by injecting the hydrogen back into the motor. To be completely ‘net zero’, vehicles will have to run on for example batteries or hydrogen. Often, fuel cells are used by this, but Tupy presented an actual hydrogen combustion engine. This Brazilian company has its European headquarters in Arnhem. It’s great to see steps taken to completely zero emission road transport, and therefore the Netherlands supports CALSTART ‘s global mou on Zero-Emission Medium- and Heavy-Duty Vehicles’. Is your own country or company on the right track to zero emission mobility? Is there any innovation we missed on SAE? Let us know in the comments.
