Insightful discussions at the Icos Capital Innovation Summit in Zurich this week with Nityen Lal. Great keynotes from Lars Kiemer from Novonesis and Sarah Bolmer from Triplebar showing the road ahead for precision fermentation. Impressive tour of the Bühler Group’s process design center. Thank you for inviting us on stage! I came away with a key insight into our positioning re: the world of biomanufacturing. Precision fermentation companies genetically engineer microroganisms to secrete biomolecules with specified structure/function targets. It’s a lot of (fascinating) engineering. Is there an opportunity to reduce the engineering challenges of biomanufacturing by shifting the focus from biology to chemistry? Marine Biologics is exploiting the natural chemistry of agricultural crops by combing through compositional data in search of biomolecules that suit structure/function requirements. Then we just mine the crop for those biomolecules—simplifying the math on speed, scale and capex. We’re pioneering a different approach to biomanufacturing, ditching fermentation tanks for fresh seaweed sold by the ton.
