IDFA is deeply alarmed by reports that Hamdan Ballal, co-director of No Other Land, the recipient of this year's Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, was violently attacked by settlers and then detained by the Israeli army without justification. The treatment of an internationally acclaimed filmmaker in this manner is a serious violation of artistic freedom, human rights, and freedom of speech—fundamental principles essential to any democratic society. Ballal’s detention follows the arrest and imprisonment of fellow Palestinian filmmaker Abdallah Motan, who was taken into custody by Israeli authorities without charges last January. • We call on our colleagues worldwide to amplify the demand for Hamdan Ballal’s release and protection. • Additionally, we urge you to take direct action by signing the petition in his support: bit.ly/4kZZ7oR. • We also reiterate our urgent call for Abdallah Motan’s immediate and unconditional release: bit.ly/4ldwViy

Jong Fruit verbindt! Na twee uitverkochte edities biedt Het Documentaire Paviljoen jonge creatievelingen wederom een podium om hun stem te laten horen. Jong Fruit is een wisselend jongerencollectief dat filmavonden cureert waarbij zelfexpressie en het perspectief van Gen Z'ers gevierd worden. Op vrijdag 28 maart keert de filmavond terug met een multidisciplinaire verkenning van het thema verbinding. Het collectief selecteerde uit het IDFA-archief vier verrassende shorts die de kracht en onvoorspelbaarheid van familie, vriendschap en liefde voelbaar maken middels onder andere animatie, archiefmateriaal en muziek. Last night, No Other Land was awarded the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature at the 96th Academy Awards. Directed by Basel Adra, Yuval Abraham, Rachel Szor, and Hamdan Ballal, the film is a powerful and urgent testament to the lived reality of Palestinian communities facing displacement. IDFA warmly congratulates the filmmakers and crew! The film follows young Palestinian activist Basel Adra in Masafer Yatta, a centuries-old network of Bedouin villages in the West Bank. His community is the target of an aggressive Israeli eviction campaign, supposedly to make way for a military base. During the day, bulldozers flatten villages; at night, desperate residents rebuild their homes. Working with Jewish-Israeli journalist Yuval Abraham and two co-directors, Adra formed a film collective. From the summer of 2019, they turned their cameras on the soldiers. The jerky hand-held images emphasize how precarious the situation is. Everyday scenes show a friendship blossoming between the two activists. Using old home videos and a voice-over, Adra explains that the oppression afflicting his community has been going on much longer. Although the documentary was finished in October 2023, the directors end with disturbing images of Masafer Yatta in wartime. It makes this urgent film both a history lesson and a tragic prologue. IDFA has long been committed to supporting bold documentary filmmaking, and No Other Land exemplifies the power of cinema to bear witness. This historic Oscar win highlights the film’s urgent subject matter and the ongoing reality faced by the people of Masafer Yatta. No Other Land was supported by the IDFA Bertha Fund.
