Integrating disaster risk reduction and climate adaptation is essential to increase resilience and protect vulnerable populations. That's why we're thrilled to announce that we'll be joined by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR)'s Carlos URIBE during next week's IPDC session! Mr Uribe is the Coordinator of the Comprehensive Risk Management Approach (CRM) at the global level, and he will present the global policy context of integrating disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation. He will also give a glimpse of the UNDRR's CRM programme. Other speakers include: • Philip Ward, Professor of Global Water Risk Dynamics at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam), who will dive into common (global) challenges countries face. • Antonio Carmona Baez, President of the University of St. Martin, who will talk about the importance of cohesive strategies and present a case study of the impact of hurricanes on Caribbean islands. • Nishchal Sardjoe, the IPDC's Indonesia country coordinator, who will present case studies focussing on policy and laws, and practical aspects. During the session, we will explore how an integrated approach helps to optimize resources, reduce duplication of efforts, and build resilience against compounding risks from both natural hazards and climate change. The session will be moderated by Annegien Tijssen, senior climate adaptation and disaster risk management specialist at Deltares. 🕒 There's still time to sign up via https://lnkd.in/gCFy4vBV 📅 30 October 2024 14:00 – 15:00 CET The sessions are part of our ongoing efforts to strengthen the knowledge network for water climate adaptation. 🤔 How can climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction be integrated, and how can we learn from each other in these areas? Join us on Wednesday 30 October for an online session to find out! During the session, we’ll explore a range of issues, including bottlenecks, challenges, and best practices, with experts and practitioners. The session will feature a broad range of speakers and will be illustrated with case studies from Indonesia and St Martin. Both Indonesia and St Martin are geographically vulnerable to challenges exacerbated by climate change such as extreme weather, natural hazards, and sea level rise. Their populations bear the brunt of this vulnerability, with many local communities having limited resources and adaptive capacity. During the session, we will explore how an integrated approach helps to optimize resources, reduce duplication of efforts, and build resilience against compounding risks from both natural hazards and climate change. The session is free and open to all those who are interested! 👉 Sign up via https://lnkd.in/guZMWHHh 📅 30 October 2024 14:00 – 15:00 CET The sessions are part of our ongoing efforts to strengthen the knowledge network for water climate adaptation. 🌊🌐 Are you about to head off to Stockholm for the SIWI - Stockholm International Water Institute World Water Week? Join us for an interactive workshop on how deltas can act as connectors from source to sea. Deltas bridge land, freshwater, and the ocean; successful delta management depends on these linkages. IPDC and the Source To Sea S2S Platform are joining to discuss how the source-to-sea approach can unlock pathways for cooperation on climate resilience and sustainable development. During the workshop we’ll discuss concrete cases from deltas around the world. The session will bring together policymakers, experts, and practitioners to share experiences from deltas around the world and lessons learned from transboundary, multi-level and cross-sectoral dialogues. The IPDC and S2S Platform will be introduced and key questions for discussion on how these two initiatives and their approaches can strengthen and complement each other will be presented. 📆 The session will take place on Tuesday 27 August at 9:00 CET. 🥳📄 We’re thrilled to announce that the first edition of the IPDC report is out now! The report was presented by the Dutch Government’s Special Envoy for Water, Meike van Ginneken, during the 10th World Water Forum in Bali. The report introduces the IPDC Guidance Framework for member countries and sets out the challenges faced by deltas, coasts, and islands. It offers a unified approach to discussing climate adaptation. The report also serves as a starting point for the discussion between IPDC member countries, including best practices and common enablers and barriers to implementing climate adaptation. The IPDC was launched during the #UN2023WaterConference. One year on, and we’ve made some real progress. But the work is only just beginning – that’s why the report also provides a solid base for future IPDC activities. After three intensive days in Rotterdam, the inaugural IPDC conference has drawn to a close. Policymakers, experts, action holders, and financial institutions came together to discuss the challenges our deltas, coasts, and islands face as a result of climate change. How can we tackle these challenges together, and what can the IPDC do to accelerate climate action? The discussions have been intense but fruitful. Looking back on a busy three days, delegates shared some key insights they gained during the conference: 🗺 Each country is different, but our problems are similar. Regardless of our backgrounds, climate change and its consequences are similar for all. Together we can see exactly what we are facing. We have a communality of issues, but we can also have a communality of solutions. We’re in this together. 🤝 The IPDC is a good platform to create a community where we can share knowledge and join efforts to do the right thing for the future and face our challenges together. We cannot act alone. The IPDC can play a crucial role as facilitator and initiative, creating synergy and connections. This way we bring together different approaches. The diverse nature of the IPDC, bringing together policymakers, expertise, and financiers, is a unique approach. ⏰ We need to do something different. We need to do a lot to face the challenges we face as a result of climate change. We need a clear vision to get different results. We no longer have the luxury of time. 💡 We face an uncertain future, so we need more research. We all face gaps; be it knowledge or financial. But we can overcome these gaps. We need to start building bridges between our scientific institutes, and our research needs to be action-driven. 💼 A good interface between policy and science is key for an easier access to finance. Thank you to all our attendees for your insights and contributions! We look back on a successful three days, but we know our work is only beginning. As we continue to shape the IPDC, we will keep sharing further insights from the conference. We’ll also look ahead to the publication of the first IPDC report. Keep following us for more! #AcceleratingClimateAction #ClimateChange #InternationalCooperation #Water #Deltas #Coasts #Islands
