JOA Project Managers are working hard to install and implement industrial heat pumps that will transform low-grade waste heat to sustainable energy. This project is remarkable for its size and the amount of #CO2 that's prevented to be being emitted to the environment. JOA provides the expertise of designing, building and implementation of both Wet Scrubbers in combination with a heat exchanger as the integration of Heat Pumps. The project at PMI will be concluded after this summer. We thank Philip Morris Holland for trusting us and for being a frontrunner in adopting technology that reduces emissions. With great joy, we announce that Rodrigo Eiras has joined JOA as Sr. Mechanical Engineer. Rodrigo brings extensive experience in creating robust technical solutions. In previous roles, he worked on Electrolyzer Systems, High-intensity burners, Chambers for Sulphur Recovery Units and Tank Containers and Pressure Vessels. Besides his engineering skills, he also brings experience regarding quality assurance, #FEA and Lean Management. Even though Rodrigo originates from Zaragoza, Spain, he has been in the Netherlands for over 10 year. Hence, he feels comfortable to wear Orange, as well as Red (and doubling his chances ;)). To comply with the Paris Agreement and the European Green Deal, the EU needs to reduce #carbon dioxide emissions. Handling Industrial #Emissions could be a a large part of the solution as a lot of generated heat is fuelled by fossil resources. Utilizing waste heat through heat pumps can help achieve a reduction by upgrading heat to necessary temperature levels. However, challenges include ensuring flexible operating conditions for heat pumps. This can be managed through control strategies affecting compressor speed and valve opening. Ronja Isert developed a steady-state model in Python at #JOA. It uses TESPy and the effectiveness NTU method to connect heat recovery from humid #exhaust gas to water via a high temperature heat pump. Varying the humid exhaust gas conditions (dew point from 47 to 52 °C and dry bulb temperature from 80 to 88 °C) showed that humidity had a greater impact on heat transfer than temperature. The high temperature heat pump's Coefficient of Performance (#COP) ranged from 2.1 to 2.4 with a Carnot efficiency above 45%. Carbon dioxide emission savings were estimated at approximately 2359 tons per year. The study indicated that the required compressor speed was higher than expected, suggesting the need for an additional compressor in each stage. The valve opening degree was within a sufficient range, but fixed superheating and subcooling degrees might not be optimal. Dynamic modelling of compressor speed and valve adjustments is recommended for further studies. Would you like to know more?
