💡 𝗞𝗥𝟮𝟭 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝘀𝘂𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸 🤔 Ever wondered how different countries balance copyright laws with user rights? Prof. Dinusha Mendis from Bournemouth University breaks it down in this enlightening three-part series based on a report she co-authored for KR21 that explores open norms in 7 jurisdictions. 🗣️ “An open norm is a flexible or a broad exception, which is favourable towards users,” explains Prof. Mendis. She highlights that open norms can sometimes take the style of a US-style fair-use exception, but this isn’t always true. 💭 𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄? 🔹 Open norms can be successfully implemented in various legal systems, including common law (USA), civil law (Japan and Korea), and hybrid systems (Canada, Israel, Singapore, and Sri Lanka). 🔹 Countries can broaden existing exceptions (like fair dealing). 🔹 There’s a need to avoid restricting open norms with exhaustive lists of when they can be applied 🔹 Judicial interpretation plays a crucial role. 🥽 The full report takes a deep dive into the: ↪️ benefits and challenges ↪️ motivations for introducing an open norm ↪️ impact in the creative sector, the research and education sector, the library sector; and ↪️ role during the pandemic 🔗 https://lnkd.in/e_tCYZDz 👀 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗗𝗶𝗻𝘂𝘀𝗵𝗮’𝘀 𝗞𝗥𝟮𝟭 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝘀𝘂𝗹𝗲𝘀: 🔹 Part 1: What is an open norm 👉 https://lnkd.in/e237wAnK 🔹 Part 2: Categories of open norms 👉 https://lnkd.in/ep2K7VJ4 🔹 Part 3: Country overviews 👉 https://lnkd.in/eKCw8h8q 📺 𝙂𝙤 & 𝙙𝙞𝙨𝙘𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙘𝙖𝙥𝙨𝙪𝙡𝙚𝙨 👉 https://lnkd.in/e6arAdfS 𝙊𝙧 𝙛𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙤𝙬 𝙪𝙨 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙖 𝙬𝙚𝙚𝙠𝙡𝙮 𝙙𝙤𝙨𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙩 𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬𝙡𝙚𝙙𝙜𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙚𝙢𝙥𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙧, 𝙞𝙣𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙢 & 𝙞𝙣𝙨𝙥𝙞𝙧𝙚! #KnowledgeCapsules #OpenNorms #FairUse #FairDealing #copyright #AccessToKnowledge #UnitedForKnowledgeRights

Over ons
The programme Knowledge Rights 21 (KR21) is focused on bringing about changes in legislation and practice across Europe that will strengthen the right of all to knowledge. It is built on a conviction that knowledge is essential for education, innovation and cultural participation, and that everyone should have the possibility - in particular through libraries, archives and digitally - to access and use it.

💡 𝗞𝗥𝟮𝟭 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝘀𝘂𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸 🤔 Ever wondered how different countries balance copyright laws with user rights? Ben White, PhD researcher at the Centre for Intellectual Property Policy & Management (CIPPM) from the Bournemouth University shares some international findings on open norms from geographies with progressive copyright regimes, as set out in the report he co-authored for KR21 that explores open norms in 7 jurisdictions. 🗣️ “"The introduction of open norms has had, I think, a sort of refreshing quality to copyright law, allowing for more flexible exceptions that are open and not the prescriptive types we see in Europe” Ben White reflects. 🔹 The motivation for many countries in implementing open norms is to support business, research, science and technology sectors by providing more adaptable copyright laws. 🔹 Countries implementing these new open norms have not experienced the negative impacts predicted by some critics. 🔹 Introducing open norms has provided a “refreshing quality” to copyright law, allowing it to be more flexible and relevant in a global, knowledge-based economy. 🥽 The full report takes a deep dive into the: ↪️ benefits and challenges ↪️ motivations for introducing an open norm ↪️ impact in the creative sector, the research and education sector, the library sector; and ↪️ role during the pandemic 🔗 https://lnkd.in/e_tCYZDz 👀 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 Ben’𝘀 𝗞𝗥𝟮𝟭 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝘀𝘂𝗹𝗲: Open norms: international findings 👉 https://lnkd.in/eYEMX2gn 📺 𝙂𝙤 & 𝙙𝙞𝙨𝙘𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙘𝙖𝙥𝙨𝙪𝙡𝙚𝙨 👉 https://lnkd.in/e6arAdfS 𝙊𝙧 𝙛𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙤𝙬 𝙪𝙨 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙖 𝙬𝙚𝙚𝙠𝙡𝙮 𝙙𝙤𝙨𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙩 𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬𝙡𝙚𝙙𝙜𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙚𝙢𝙥𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙧, 𝙞𝙣𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙢 & 𝙞𝙣𝙨𝙥𝙞𝙧𝙚! #KnowledgeCapsules #OpenNorms #FairUse #FairDealing#copyright #AccessToKnowledge #UnitedForKnowledgeRights

🎃 Halloween Special: 5 "Undead Clichés" Haunting Copyright & Information Policy in Europe! 🎃 From "copyright solves everything" to "licensing works," some copyright myths just won’t die 👻 – and they’re blocking progress on crucial goals like research, education, and cultural access across Europe. This Halloween, we’re shining a light on five outdated and inaccurate clichés that need to be put to rest once and for all: 1️⃣ The Philosopher’s Stone: copyright cannot solve all challenges, from AI to cultural diversity, and often stifles innovation. 2️⃣ The Wizard’s Wand: licensing does not provide balance, as it more often than not restricts equitable access to research and culture, limiting libraries and public institutions. 3️⃣ The Incubus: flexible copyright rules can work in Europe under civil law, as shown in KR21's open norms report. 4️⃣ The Midas Touch: research policy should not only be about funding. It’s also about making sure copyright isn’t a barrier to knowledge creation. 5️⃣ Two-Face: attempting to split commercial and non-commercial research rights is an impossible task given how research and industry intersect in Europe. To support true progress in knowledge-sharing, it’s time to lay these myths to rest. 🚫 🕸️ Read more in our blog post: https://lnkd.in/eHAW9tdB #CopyrightReform #Innovation #Research #KnowledgeRights #DigitalRights #HalloweenSpecial
