It's international #OpenAccess Week! 📜 And ALLEA has a timely #new publication advocating for more #OpenScience and research #collaboration by establishing universal and harmonised Secondary Publication Rights (#SPRs), a legal mechanism that allows researchers to freely share publicly funded scholarly articles via institutional or other non-profit repositories, across the EU - in keeping with the theme of putting #Community over #Commercialization. As Prof P. Bernt Hugenholtz, Principal Author of the Statement and Professor at the UvA's Institute for Information Law (IViR) puts it, “Secondary publication rights are powerful rights in the hands of the scientific community. They allow us to freely share our publications online on non-profit sites and archives without the excessive costs associated with Gold Open Access publishing. Now that several EU countries have introduced these rights in their national laws, it is important to harmonise them at the EU-level so the rules are the same across Europe.” Read more about the statement, drafted by ALLEA's Working Group on Intellectual Property Rights chaired by Université catholique de Louvain's Prof Alain Strowel, here 👇 https://lnkd.in/dNr7XdKt

Serving European Academies • Promoting science as a global public good • Shaping the conditions for research
Info
ALLEA is the European Federation of Academies of Sciences and Humanities, representing more than 50 academies from over 40 EU and non-EU countries. Since its foundation in 1994, ALLEA speaks out on behalf of its members on the European and international stages, promotes science as a global public good, and facilitates scientific collaboration across borders and disciplines. Academies are self-governing bodies of distinguished scientists drawn from all fields of scholarly inquiry. They contain a unique human resource of intellectual excellence, experience and multidisciplinary knowledge dedicated to the advancement of science and scholarship in Europe and the world. Jointly with its members, ALLEA seeks to improve the conditions for research, to provide the best independent and interdisciplinary science advice available, and to strengthen the role of science in society. In doing so, ALLEA channels the expertise of European academies for the benefit of the research community, decision-makers and the public. Outputs include science-based advice in response to societally relevant topics, as well as activities to encourage scientific cooperation, scientific reasoning and values through public engagement. ALLEA is constituted as a non-for-profit association and remains fully independent from political, religious, commercial or ideological interests.

How can the #EU's next research programme, #FP10, elevate #Research & #Innovation in Europe and enable our scientists, young and established, to do their best work in #STEM and #SSH? Read our response to a recent report on #FP10 released by the European Commission's independent advisory group, titled, "Align, Act, Accelerate," outlining an ambitious vision for the EU's next research programme. How do you think we can build a more #inclusive and innovative research ecosystem in #Europe? Share your thoughts with us!
🚀 The ALLEA WG on the #ERA also responded to a recent report on #FP10 released by the European Commission's independent advisory group, titled, "Align, Act, Accelerate," outlining an ambitious vision for the EU's next research programme. While applauding the report's objectives and much needed recommendations, ALLEA, through its WG, raises important concerns regarding potential gaps. For instance, the proposed creation of two new governance bodies that emphasise the importance of industrial competitiveness could lead to fragmentation in the research landscape, as well as neglect of fundamental research. Read the full response 👇 https://lnkd.in/dTHADPTW As we prepare for the next phase of FP10, lets make sure that research funding remains #inclusive, #transparent, and driven by scientific #excellence. Together, we can create a thriving, diverse European research ecosystem that meets the challenges of our time! 🗓️ Official negotiations on FP10 will begin in mid-2025, with the programme set to launch in 2028. It's happening tomorrow! ALLEA is jointly organising a 3-part #invitation-only #workshop series, together with Re-Imagine Europa, on decoding #polarisation in the debates on #sustainable #food systems, in which we tackle the “who”, “what”, “where”, and “why” of polarisation, and explore “how” we can depolarise the critical conversations needed to arrive at #innovative solutions for an #inclusive and #equitable future. In the first workshop, illustrious speakers, Barbara Gallani (European Food Safety Authority (EFSA)) and Professor Sir Charles Godfray (Oxford Martin School) share their insights into who the various players in the food system are and how their #interests, priorities and worldviews vary and #intersect when it comes to designing #Sustainable Food systems for #Europe. #Limited spots available! If you would like to participate in this workshop/series, please email ronald@allea.org to reserve your spot. 🖥️ Actors and Agendas – Analysing “Who” are the Players in Sustainable Food Systems and “What” are their Interests 📅 18 Oct, Friday 🕛 1100-1300 CET Read more about the workshop series here 👇 https://lnkd.in/dxRMuApu #farmers, #policy, #food, #strategicdialogue, #europe, #agriculture, #sustainability
