  • Straight from the mouth of the regulator: Foundational models have different levels of accuracy and biases. When implementing AI for a variety of use cases, companies leverage foundational models and add proprietary + third party data to further train the model, further expanding inherent biases. This not only affects consumers but the ecosystem itself: in the age of embedded finance, one biased model can hinder many partners. Inadvertent Biases also increase companies costs, turn away good customers reducing consumer trust, creates customer service bottlenecks and expand product gaps. This is precisely what inspires us at Kindlee (Techstars Miami '24). We want to foster a safer and more innovative AI ecosystem in fintech. Immensely grateful to European Women Payments Network (EWPN) for a fantastic panel, and Frans van Bruggen from the De Nederlandsche Bank for your regulatory insight. #responsibleAI #AIAct #fintech #womeninfintech #womeninpayments

  • The AI Act is shaping the future of our industry and influencing regulatory guardrails across the globe. While SB 1047 was vetoed, it was done so in the concern that defining risk by the cost of restraining models rather than on the risk of the potential use/implementation. New regulatory proposals need more robust definitions of risk and human oversight. Thanks Nikita Koselev for an insightful piece supporting our mission! #AIACT #responsibleAI #responsiblefintech #sb1047 #femalefounders

  • Last week Amsterdam Fintech Event 2024 brought together a plethora of brilliant minds, starting with the Visa for Fintechs event, sharing crucial insights from our industry. Nothing like hearing validation on the risks in AI implementation and evolution of fraud from the one and only Jason Mikula from Fintech Business Weekly, to fuel our passion to drive more responsible and safe AI/ML development in the industry, particularly learning that since 2023, regulators have issued higher enforcement cases against banks and financial institutions than ever before. This is why investing in safety and infrastructure is such a critical need. Music 🎶to our ears! • Let's discuss readiness for the enforcement of the AI Act in August 2025. While compliance audits are set to begin then, many aspects of the requirements are still being debated. Industry leaders appointed by the European Commission are defining an AI 'Code of Conduct' covering transparency, copyright protection, risk assessment, and technical risk management. The finalized standards are expected by April 2025, creating uncertainty for companies and startups navigating compliance challenges and costs. The looming question for businesses is how to balance compliance costs and legal risks while fostering innovation and upholding ethical standards. The pressure is on for companies to adapt to the evolving landscape of AI governance. Read more: [Link to article] #AI #Compliance #EthicalStandards #Innovation #AIAct #EuropeanCommission

  • In case you didn't know, last week Linkedin stealthy opted most of its users in to use their data to train their AI models. Most of us, except for those in the EU and Switzerland (and as of last Friday, in the UK too, thanks to an appeal by the Information Commissioner's Office). • New day, new AI regulation. Despite their differences, there is consensus around the need for bias audits: “What do both bills have in common? The AI Act and SB 1047 both require frequent third party audits for transparency, explainability and fairness, which unquestionably sets the direction of AI governance onwards in the world’s biggest tech economies.” #airegulation #aicompliance #regtech #responsibleAI #AIAct #SB1047 #elonmusk

I Can’t Believe I’m on the Same Side as Elon Musk! For years, we’ve seen the rapid acceleration of AI technology, and as someone deeply committed to ethical AI, I never thought I’d find myself echoing Elon Musk’s calls for more AI regulation. But here we are. The recent passage of California's SB 1047 -a landmark AI safety bill-signals a new era of regulatory oversight, attempting to reign in the potential dangers of unregulated AI. This bill mirrors what we’ve long anticipated: regulators stepping in to keep AI in check, ensuring it benefits society and doesn’t cause harm. However, it’s crucial to understand the difference in regulatory philosophies. The AI Act in Europe takes a much more comprehensive and risk-based approach, creating a clear hierarchy of risks from low to high-risk use cases like decisioning algorithms (ML) , biometric surveillance or creditworthiness assessments. California’s bill, by contrast, takes a broader but less defined approach, focusing primarily on transparency and disclosure requirements. Another key aspect is the definition of risk being based on the COST of retraining failed models instead of the breadth of implementation and impact. What do both bills have in common? The AI Act and SB 1047 both require frequent third party audits for transparency, explainability and fairness, which unquestionably sets the direction of AI governance onwards in the world’s biggest tech economies. At Kindlee (Techstars Miami '24) we’re preparing to support deployers of AI models navigate both regulatory landscapes. Our solution aims to provide robust anti-bias auditing and compliance tools that go beyond transparency, ensuring fairness across high impact sectors like finance, HR, and ensuring safety and fair financial access for consumers. As regulators globally work to keep pace with AI innovation, the real challenge will be how well they can balance safety with progress. We’re here to help bridge that gap. #responsibleAI #SB1047 #fairnessinAI #AIAct #reaponsiblefinance #femalefounders #regtech #aigovernance #fintech

🌍 Last Thursday Kindlee, with our partner, InterQuest Group hosted a roundtable with leaders in Data and Risk in Amsterdam. We explored the challenges organisations face in implementing AI while staying aligned with evolving regulatory and ethical standards. A big thank you to Anna Massey and InterQuest Group for your support, and all the participants for an insightful conversation! Here are the key takeaways from our discussion: 👉 𝗙𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗜:There’s no one-size-fits-all. We must address bias early in the data pipeline to build ethical AI systems from the ground up. 👉 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗚𝗗𝗣𝗥: Start preparing now for the AI Act. Those who build transparency and governance frameworks early will have a competitive edge. 👉 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗕𝗼𝘅 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺: AI explainability is critical—organisations need visibility into how decisions are made to ensure ethical outcomes. 👉 𝗔𝗜’𝘀 𝗣𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲 𝗕𝗶𝗮𝘀: With the right frameworks, AI can reduce human bias, but continuous monitoring is key. 👉 𝗚𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗝𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆: Fairness and transparency require ongoing efforts, not just a one-time fix. 👉 𝗘𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗜 𝗜𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗮 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲: It's not just about following the rules, it's about creating systems that reflect the value of fairness, inclusivity and transparency - values that customers and users increasingly demand. As AI becomes a larger part of our lives, the question of how to ensure fairness, transparency, and inclusivity will only grow in importance. The insights shared during this roundtable are just the beginning of an ongoing conversation about how we can build AI that truly serves everyone.
