The EU AI Act comes into force today. This pioneering legislation aims to foster “safe AI innovation” and provide companies with a framework to ensure fairness in deploying their AI models. For companies in Europe, and non EU-based companies using European data in their decisioning models - what are you most concerned about when it comes to complying with the AI Act? #ai #aiact #ethicalai https://lnkd.in/e5F77Y9Q

This week's London AI Meetup, organised by Mindstone, presented a solid lineup of content, including Erik Schmiegelow from Hivemind Technologies AG's presentation on "Practical LLMs - Matching and Ranking". He demoed a Programmatic approach using LangChain and how implementing a composable architecture can allow the use of smaller models for specific tasks, thereby decreasing costs and latency. Read the summary from Nikita Koselev in the link below! https://lnkd.in/eQHMxBEi

How to tread the fine line between innovation and regulation, that is the (new) question. The Labour Party government is set to announce a new #AIBill in the UK tomorrow during the King's Speech (watch it here: https://lnkd.in/ebBg6z4q on July 17, Wednesday at 11:25am GMT/ 12:25pm CET). Acknowledging the importance of regulatory frameworks to ensure inclusivity by design is a step in the right direction for the new UK government. It will be interesting to see the UK's take on AI legislation and risks compared to the EU AI Act's.

What does Stephen Hawking have to do with Siri? Hawking’s speech device utilised early forms of speech-to-text technology, converting his cheek muscle movements into spoken words. This innovation was not just a personal tool for Hawking but a stepping stone that demonstrated the potential of technology to enhance human capabilities. Today, the influence of such early accessibility tools is evident in mainstream applications. Speech-to-text technology, initially developed to aid individuals with disabilities, now plays a critical role in virtual assistants like Siri and Alexa. These systems provide real-time transcription, voice commands, and automated responses, making everyday tasks more manageable for everyone. The journey from Hawking’s speech device to our current speech-to-text technology underscores the importance of accessibility-driven innovation.

Our assumptions become reality and can either empower or hinder others. Watch the powerful campaign by SMALL #assumethatican

Why did our “Assume That I Can” campaign go viral? Firstly, I believe many people resonated with the message and, by sharing the campaign, wanted to help shatter prejudices and change perceptions of people with Down syndrome. However, I also think there are a few less evident — and sometimes executional— reasons. Here’s my take: - We adhered to the crucial rule: "Hook the audience from the very first seconds." Our film begins with the actress Madison Tevlin staring powerfully into the camera and saying something unexpected from a person with Down syndrome: "Hey bartender!" This grabs attention immediately, making people curious about what happens next. - The film maintains a fast pace through a dynamic combination of acting, direction, editing, and music. This keeps viewers engaged and prevents boredom, ensuring they watch until the end. - Madison discusses topics like alcohol and sex. And she swears! This isn’t done for shock value but to reinforce the campaign's message and break more taboos (even within the community). But again, it’s something unexpected from a person with Down syndrome, which makes it more impactful. - The insight is relatable to many people, even those outside the Down syndrome community, prompting them to share it. - Since it's a campaign for a charity, people are more inclined to share it as there’s no for-profit brand behind it. - Lastly, we created a vertical version for TikTok and Instagram. While this may be challenging for those who love horizontal formats, vertical content is arguably more effective on these platforms. #AssumeThatICan #SmallTheAgency SMALL

Improving financial inclusion through Responsible AI @Kindlee Global Fintech Executive & Inclusion Leader/ RiseUp Money 20/20 EU Mentor ‘21

I wish I was surprised by this anecdote but just like this example, there are thousands of misinterpretations in product, data and technological development which unintentionally negatively affects the lives of people from Vulnerable populations. This is the very inspiration behind Kindlee and the reason our team is so committed to fight systemic biases in AI. We can directly improve the lives of those who need it most. #AIbiases #disability #techforgood #responsibleai #womenintech #aiact

AI thinks I'm a bike!? 🚲 At London Tech Week, I came across an AI demonstration where the system hilariously mistook my wheelchair for a bike! 😆 This surprising moment highlights a crucial issue. While AI has great potential to enhance accessibility and inclusion, it also brings significant challenges that we need to tackle. But first, we must move past the oversimplified notion that "humans are biased, so AI is biased." That's pretty obvious; the real challenge lies in understanding and addressing how these biases impact AI and finding meaningful solutions. Here's what’s really going on: 1. Lack of Disability Data: Many AI systems are trained on data that doesn’t include enough information about disabled people. So, this lack of data means AI can't fully understand (or in my case, identify) or address the needs of disabled people. 2. Bias from Missing Data: If AI systems don’t include disability data, they may be unfair, ableist and exclusionary. They are designed based on typical and normative profiles, so if someone doesn’t fit these profiles, the AI might not work well for them. 3. Misuse of Disability Data: Even when disability data is included, there’s a risk that the AI might still miss out on important needs. This happens because the way data is organised can sometimes lead to overlooking certain individuals or their unique needs - intersectionality. To make AI truly effective and inclusive, we must focus on these challenges and work towards solutions that ensure all individuals are fairly represented and considered. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this! How have you experienced or addressed similar challenges? Share your insights or solutions below—let’s collaborate on making AI more inclusive for everyone! Yeah, AI is gonna make inclusion and accessibility efforts go backwards. #AI #Inclusion #Accessibility #TechForGood #DEI
