Groundbraking: The first Strawberry Demonstation Day in Ethiopia! You have to watch this video. Those who thought Ethiopia is a country that needs more developments should think again. From growing strawberries in open fields, to cultivating strawberries on growing gutters in the Mini-Air. This modern strawberry farm in Africa is not only taking responsibility for the environment, but also has a major social impact. Approximately 500 workers receive daily meals and fresh water. Gender equality, (sexual) harassment and health are important topics, which workers are regularly educated about. What do you think about taking social responsibility for your employees?

Will Ethiopia become the new “Westland” of Africa? Ethiopia is a country with ideal climate conditions for sustainable horticulture, particularly for growing soft fruits on a large scale. Currently, this mostly takes place in open fields. According to a study done by the Agricultural Department of the Netherlands Embassy in Addis Ababa (2021) is the potential significant, giving the global demand for soft fruits and the favorable climate conditions for cultivating crops like strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries. It’s no coincidence that a valued customer, Wout van Koppen, is one of Ethiopia’s largest strawberry growers and is involved in an initiative with Zuqualla Horti PLC, FlevoPant B.V., Resilience BV and Meteor Systems, with the support from the Dutch Enterprise Agency (#RVO). For this project, we recently built a Dutch soft fruit demonstration greenhouse, which consists of a Mini-Air tunnel, suspended growing solution and drip irrigation. Flevoplant has introduced two new strawberry varieties that are being cultivated on growing gutters, reusing the drain water and minimizing the use of pesticides and fertilizers. By sharing knowledge about advanced growing systems we aim to train more than 200 African growers to produce soft fruits locally with minimal environmental impact and maximum production. Meteor Systems has just completed a 3-hectare project in Western China, implementing growing systems for the production of gerbera and calla lilies. This growing solution manages water effectively and ensures precise distribution of nutrients to each plant. Excess water is collected, drained, and can then be reused. Benieuwd waarom eindgebruikers zo tevreden zijn over de teeltsystemen van Meteor Systems? Onze wereldwijde levering vanuit de fabriek in Breda speelt hierin een belangrijke rol. Het succes is mede te danken aan onze medewerkers die elke dag op de werkvloer staan om te zorgen dat het machinepark goed draait. En dat is een uitdagende klus. Andre Geertse, allround monteur, vertelt over zijn 10 jaar ervaring in de Technische Dienst: In mijn dagelijkse werkzaamheden los ik storingen op aan machines, verbeter ik technische prestaties zodat deze op volle toeren productie kunnen draaien, en zorg ik ervoor dat orders op tijd klaar zijn en naar de klant worden gestuurd. Wat ik het leukst vind aan mijn werk is het zelf bouwen van machines: ⇾ Van een idee naar de tekentafel, ⇾ het bestellen van onderdelen, ⇾ het in elkaar zetten vanaf een kaal frame, ⇾ tot het uiteindelijk in productie brengen. Ik heb veel plezier in het renoveren van oude machines. Waarom zouden wij deze weggooien als we ze zelf opnieuw kunnen bouwen? Ook in de Technische dienst staan wij voor duurzaamheid en een wast-free toekomst. Daarnaast ben ik mede verantwoordelijk voor de veiligheid van medewerkers. Dit varieert in het begeleiden van medewerkers naar buiten bij een brandmelding tot het plakken van een pleister. Ik volg regelmatig cursussen voor veilig werken en sta meteen paraat bij calamiteiten. Kortom, met veel plezier werk ik dagelijks in een veilige fabrieksomgeving in dit prachtige machinepark.
