Midwest-based greenhouse vegetable grower focused on quality, freshness and flavor

About us

Bushel Boy Farms was founded in Owatonna, Minn. in 1990 with a simple desire to grow fresh, local, and vine-ripened tomatoes year-round, even in the depth of a Minnesota winter. Known for their indoor farming leadership and red, ripe colored and fresh garden-flavored tomatoes, Bushel Boy has been supplying the upper Midwest with tomatoes year-round—long before locally grown was an important consumer-buying consideration. Bushel Boy’s expert agriculture team has created the perfect growing environment in its Owatonna and Mason City, Iowa facilities, combining the latest in greenhouse design and technology with the hands-on TLC it takes to produce high-quality, premium produce. Bushel Boy crops are always vine-ripened, carefully packed and rapidly shipped for maximum freshness and flavor. Bushel Boy Farms is a leader in Minnesota’s food production space and a passionate innovator in the region’s indoor farming category. With the most recent launch of its two cucumber varieties and ongoing success with tomatoes and strawberries, Bushel Boy continues to explore new consumer-driven produce varieties that help retailers create supply chain efficiencies and address market demand. The company’s unique manufacturing practice (indoor farming) continues to evolve with new technologies and enables their tomato, strawberry, and cucumber plants to grow in all weather conditions, providing upper Midwesterners with local, fresh produce to enjoy any time of year.

It’s our responsibility to reduce waste as a sustainable food company, which is why we started composting materials beginning in 2023. Our first priority is to support our communities through donations to regional food banks, including Second Harvest Heartland and Channel One Regional Food Bank. We donated more than 300 tons of produce in 2023. We also send our leaves and tomatoes waste to the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community’s (SMSC) Organic Recycling Facility to be processed as #compost. We’re proud to report that we composted more than 225 tons of material last year. We're currently researching additional ways to divert other materials away from landfills, including redesigning the support clips used in our growing process to be made from compostable materials, connecting with local farmers for more composting opportunities, increasing recycling rates and exploring technologies that will help manage more compostable materials at our growing locations. #ZeroWaste #SustainableLiving

We teamed up with pioneering technology company IUNU to implement the industry’s most-advanced AI-powered technology — LUNA AI. This partnership signifies a seismic shift for the industry, leveraging AI to unlock uncharted levels of progress in food production. 🧑🔬 Deployed collaboratively at our Owatonna headquarters, LUNA AI combines sophisticated AI and software with advanced cameras to register and monitor crops during the growing cycle, empowering our growing team to make informed production decisions based on superior data and insights. 🧑💻 The software captures and processes crop data more accurately than ever before by placing the plant at the center of its analysis, compared to previous technologies that relied on manual inputs from non-statistically significant metrics. The towering hardware features multiple cameras at varying heights that capture Images from an entire plant, top to bottom, recording metrics at a faster, more frequent pace than any other previous technology. ➡️ We’re proud of the results highlighted below and can’t wait to see the impact this innovation has on our industry and the greater food system. ⭐️ Our crop registration improved by more than 500 times what Bushel Boy was previously able to manually collect, leading to notable time and cost savings. ⭐️ We collected and analyzed data daily from a statistically significant sample of crops compared to their previous weekly cadence from just 0.2% of all crops. ⭐️ We decreased fertilizer costs by 10% because of improved issue detection and data collection.
