How do you communicate with ... 🚩🏁🏴☠️ At Mijksenaar #Lab, we want to find out, and we need your help! Every year, Weekend van de Wetenschap organizes a citizen science project to explore the frontiers of science. This year, the organization chose our research on visual language, which investigates how people interpret visual information. The research, by #Lab director Fenne Roefs focuses on the visual language that is used beach safety flags. These flags are used to indicate safety at open-water locations where you can swim, like the sea or a lake. Previous research shows that the public often misunderstands the existing flags, which may lead to dangerous situations. How should the flags look, so that they are clear to everyone? To answer that question, the flags in this study are designed not only for, but also by the public itself. Participants choose between different colors and icons for each flag. The results provide us with insights into associations between visual elements and meaning, and what an optimal design should look like. This research was developed with Prof Chris Olivers and Dr Joshua Snell of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam). The pictograms were developed by us, in collaboration with the VU and the Stichting NIVZ Netherlands Institute for Swimming Water Safety. The experiment was programmed by Sergio Alejandro Gutierrez Maury, Quinten Madari and Gert Faber of the VU.

Absolutely thrilled to share highlights from our recent trip to Milano where we visited the incredible team at Tecne - Gruppo Autostrade per l'Italia! 🇮🇹✨   As admirers of Jock Kinneir and Margaret Calvert, we never shy away from a deep dive into innovative approaches to information and highway design.  What we experienced, however, far exceeded our expectations.   Special thanks to the people of Tecne who welcomed and received us just as they would in their home. Thank you, Ennio Cascetta and NET Engineering’s Giovanni Acciaro for their inspiring presentations! Ennio’s insights on the beauty of train stations and its profound impact on user well-being and urban vitality were awe-inspiring. 💐   During our visit, we conducted two workshops:   ✏️ Sketch Milano: a city orientation exercise We had the team draw Milano from memory, replicating our ‘Draw Rotterdam’ project. It was fascinating to see how personal habits and the way we live the city, favorite spots like cafes, gelaterias, and shops shape our mental maps of our cities.   🛣️ The road sign: a navigation challenge We analyzed access roads at Joburg airport, brainstorming various reorganization and clarity strategies. We returned to Amsterdam brimming with inspiration and energy. Grazie, Milano! 📢 Informare e #ispirare per ripensare e #progettare. 📝 La scorsa settimana nella sede di Milano, abbiamo dedicato una giornata al #wayfinding, una metodologia innovativa per progettare sistemi di informazione e orientamento per gli spazi pubblici. Insieme allo Studio MIJKSENAAR, studio olandese che da decenni indaga su come le infografiche spaziali influiscano sulla vita delle persone, abbiamo scoperto come il wayfinding non sia semplice segnaletica, ma l'insieme delle tecniche che permette alle persone di orientarsi e usare lo spazio in modo consapevole e in #sicurezza. Nella prima parte della giornata l'intervento del Presidente Ennio Cascetta ci ha trasmesso il senso della bellezza nella progettazione delle infrastrutture in modo che uno spazio non sia solo utile, ma anche bello, congruente, facile da percepire e interpretare; con Adriaan (Aad) Kalkman, Lara Pérez-Porro e Giovanni Acciaro di NET Engineering siamo entrati nel vivo del wayfinding con esempi e casi studio approfondendo i diversi punti di vista: metro, stazioni, aeroporti, cantieri e musei sono spazi molto diversi fra loro ma dove il wayfinding affonda le sue tecniche. Il pomeriggio invece è stato dedicato a un momento di #formazione dove i nostri colleghi hanno avuto modo di rivedere attraverso nuovi occhi e nuovi strumenti ciò che significa disegnare la mappa concettuale di una città o interpretare un complesso cartello autostradale. Sono queste le giornate che ci permettono di vedere il nostro lavoro da un punto di vista diverso e che ci regala nuovi stimoli e nuove idee per il nostro modo di progettare. *Een toegankelijke omgeving voor iedereen!* Dat is het gezamenlijke doel van specialist in wayfinding MIJKSENAAR en Koninklijke Visio Zicht op Toegankelijkheid. Mijksenaar werd door Schiphol gevraagd assistentiepalen te ontwerpen en plaatsen. Visio adviseerde over de toegankelijkheid ervan. Thoas Hooning van Duyvenbode, Design Lead bij Mijksenaar, benadrukt het belang van deze samenwerking: “Door vroeg in het ontwerpproces samen te werken met specialisten, zorgen we ervoor dat onze ontwerpen voldoen aan alle eisen van alle gebruikers.” Samen bouwen we aan een inclusieve omgeving waar iedereen zich welkom voelt. I'm excited to be one of the speakers at the Design Innovation Sessions organised by CLICKNL during the Dutch Design Week in October. I look forward to sharing insights on an innovative wayfinding project that we are currently working on, in collaboration with partners from various disciplines.
