Looking back at a week in which I had the pleasure to take part in the conference on #AI and #copyright and (!) #relatedrights organised by the Hungarian IPO (Szellemi Tulajdon Nemzeti Hivatala) as part of the #HU24EU presidency. Together with Emilie Anthonis (MPA), Angela Mills Wade (EPC), András SZINGER (Artists) and Lodovico Benvenuti (IFPI), I took part in a panel moderated by Christophe Geiger. The question was Why? and How? we need copyright (and related rights) holders to be remunerated for the use of their works for the training of GenAI models. To the #Why? the answer is very straightforward. Performers are still the ones that make works perceivable by an audience, including computers. They make our culture human and just like any teacher they deserve to be remunerated for their work. To the #How? a response is needed urgently, but all options are still open. For performers this includes the possibility of statutory remuneration rights. Such rights do not take away control. They give remuneration to those who already lost control. A big thank you goes out to Peter Labody, Gergely Csősz and the whole team at Szellemi Tulajdon Nemzeti Hivatala for the invitation to this very interesting and well organised event. The initiative is rooted in a shared mission between IMRO and Dublin Airport to support and elevate the incredible homegrown talent that defines Ireland’s cultural identity ☘ 🎶
