Making a full upper out of liquid biomass This is the second post in my small series about NEFFA | New Fashion Factory, the biotech company that I am a cofounder of. This time I would like to show how our robotic technology and MYCOTEX material can be used to create full uppers. Because our material is a liquid that is applied around a low-cost, lightweight, recyclable mold by a robot arm, we can create shapes and textures that are not possible with conventional manufacturing methods. For instance, as you can see in these images, we can create uppers that are fully seamless and have parametric 3D textures that are not possible to create with regular embossing plates. Furthermore, we can adjust the thickness of the material in different areas of the upper, potentially eliminating the need for reinforcement. We were overwhelmed with response after last week´s post about using MYCOTEX as a leather-like coating for heels, but we still have limited availability in our lab for a co-development project with a footwear brand and/or manufacturer that is committed to innovation and would like to produce gorgeous compostable shoes that can be made locally. Mycotex is making its way into footwear! As many of you will know, I am also the cofounder of NEFFA | New Fashion Factory, a biotech company that is reinventing the entire supply chain by producing compostable 3D products out of liquid biomass. Our first biofabricated material is called Mycotex, since it is made from the roots of mushrooms. In the past few years we focused on optimizing our robotic production method - which is developed in collaboration with DESMA Schuhmaschinen GmbH - for objects that do not have to be worn on the body, but now we are ready to make our first steps into footwear! This week I will post a few examples of the new opportunities that our production technology provides. Here is the first one: covering complex heels with a leather-like material! Technologies like 3D printing make it possible to develop fantastic new heel shapes, but laminating these with leather or other sheet materials is practically impossible. Since Mycotex is a liquid material, it can be used to make full uppers, but also as a leather-like coating to cover hardware or heels, as you can see here. This makes it an amazing solution for the luxury footwear industry. We can base the composition of the biomass on your needs, whether you want it to be shiny or matte, textured or smooth, in various colours etc. Our lab in The Netherlands currently has space for two new customers from the footwear industry that are interested in applying our technology in their products, whether they are suppliers of footwear parts or brands that want to develop full footwear concepts!
