Last week, we had the pleasure of gathering for the 21st NIG Conference at Universiteit Gent, and what an event it was! Two days filled with thought-provoking discussions, inspiring presentations, and valuable exchanges with colleagues from across the field of public administration and governance. A big thank you to everyone who contributed—our speakers, panelists, organizers, and, of course, all the participants who brought their energy, ideas, and research to the table. These moments of connection and academic dialogue are what make our community so special. We’re already looking forward to continuing these conversations and seeing you again next year KU Leuven Instituut voor de Overheid ! 📸 The pictures from the conference taken by Lucas van der Wee | Fotografie are now available on our website: https://lnkd.in/eebX4MsG

📣 You can register until Friday 17 January for Studying Governance: Questions, Designs, and Methodologies (5EC)! 📆 10-14 February 2025 📍 Utrecht School of Governance 👩🏫 Merlijn van Hulst, Dimiter Toshkov and Barbara Vis ➡ Register here: https://lnkd.in/eXgNTAkH Studying Governance: Questions, Designs, and Methodologies is an important part of the NIG curriculum. It explores general issues of research design in public administration and political science. It engages with some fundamental epistemological and methodological questions from multiple perspectives, as well as with more practical issues related to the formulation of a research question, the choice of research approach, and the development of the elements of the research plan. We will discuss how different methodological assumptions underlying research are manifested in designing research projects and in analyzing and presenting the data collected in the context of this design. In particular, we will cover the construction of research questions; the selection of research goals; the fit between goals, questions and research design; the selection of cases or sites to research and evidence to collect; and strategies for enhancing the trustworthiness (e.g., reliability, validity, credibility) and relevance (generalizability, practical significance, and scientific contribution) of research projects.

We are truly sad to hear about the passing of Fabienne Maron. For many years she has been of great significance for the field of public administration in Europe and also beyond. We wish to offer our sincere condolences to everyone mourning the loss. The IIAS website (https://lnkd.in/e2XEAUMf) displays several really touching memorials for a great person whom we should, and will, remember in our field.

Doing PhD or early career research on European integration? Then consider attending the NIG course ‘Current Themes in EU Governance’ (https://lnkd.in/eqP8CX2r). This will take place 25-28 March 2025 at Utrecht University, The Netherlands. The course focuses on European integration in times of increasing politicization. It traces the effects of domestic and EU-level politicization and contestation on the institutional setup of decision making, compliance and enforcement- and the way these processes unfold in reality. Also, it covers the construction and functioning of the European Administrative Space, and EU coordination by national executives and parliaments. The course provides participants with an in-depth understanding of these core themes. It also aims to strengthen students’ research skills and reflection on research choices. Participants will explore the nexus between academic research and practice, and have ample opportunity to discuss their research ideas with peers and renowned experts. The course is aimed at PhD students working on EU-related research or on research with EU-aspects to it. Please note that this is not an introductory course. Participants without knowledge of European Governance at the BA-level will receive guidance for self-study, to fill knowledge gaps in advance. The course will be taught by Peter Bursens (Antwerp University), Mendeltje van Keulen (University of Applied Sciences The Hague), Markus Haverland (Erasmus University Rotterdam), Ellen Mastenbroek (Radboud University), Bernard Steunenberg (Leiden University), Oliver Treib (University of Münster). Registration is open until 25 February 2025. At this time, ten open spots are available. For more information, see https://lnkd.in/eqP8CX2r.
