Willem de Kooning Academy, University of the Arts Utrecht HKU, Academy of Theatre and Dance AHK, Centre of Applied Research for Art Design and Technology CARADT and Nieuwe Instituut organise a symposium on the 10th of April on the current flows and obstacles in regenerative arts and design. A wide range of creative practices realised processes, proofs-of-concept, works-in-progress, developed artworks, products and services will be presented by their creators and discussed in moderated groups of participants. This symposium responds to the urgent need to foster a regenerative culture and economy in which human and more-than-human life can flourish. The aim is to develop a collective understanding of the common characteristics of regenerative practice and how these can work across scales, locations and disciplines. What are the elephants in the room? Which relationships in education, creative practices and broader systems need to be broken and which revitalised? Art and design practices with their aesthetic material, political and transformative qualities and sensibilities have a vital contribution to make here. Discussions will focus on three interwoven themes: 1. Creative Practices, 2. Regenerative Economies/Human-Inclusive Ecosystems and 3. Education/Didactics 📅 10 April, 09:00-18:00 📍 Het Nieuwe Instituut 🎟 €35 professionals or €20 students Learn more via this link: https://lnkd.in/e_ZhcZUZ 📸 Slide 1 - Compos(t)ing: Regenerative Creative Practices Symposium 📸 Slide 2 - Work group, 'Belonging Matters', co-presented by Irene Fortuyn from participating practice Land & Hand and Willemien Ippel from The Linen Project 📸 Slide 3 - Participating practice Oyster Heaven, presented by founder George Birch 📸 Slide 4 - Work group 'Wild Pedagogies: being at home in the world', co-presented by Ruben Jacobs from HKU and Annemarie Piscaer from CARADT 📸 Slide 5 - The symposium reflection will be given by keynote speaker Estelle Zhong Mengual

Het nationale museum en instituut voor architectuur, design en digitale cultuur
Over ons

The exhibition Soengoe Kondre / Submerged Heritage, which was previously on display at the Nieuwe Instituut, has travelled to two locations in Suriname. It is very special that the exhibitions are on show at these locations. Under the title Singi Konde, the exhibition was co-presented with Stichting DOB (Duurzame Ontwikkeling Bigipondo) in the transmigration village of Brownsweg, where many of the displaced inhabitants of the submerged town of Ganzee came to live. With the title Sungu Kondre, the exhibition can be seen in Paramaribo from 28 February to 30 March 2025, presented at the Afro-Surinamese socio-cultural organisation NAKS, which works to preserve and raise awareness of Afro-Surinamese culture and heritage. The exhibition introduces visitors to the submerged interior of Suriname, where an area of about 1,560 square kilometres was flooded when the Afobaka Stuwdam was completed in 1964. The construction of the dam led to the large-scale displacement of the Maroon communities that had lived for over 200 years. 📲 Learn more via this link: https://lnkd.in/eY_VivfF 📸 by Sheila Pinas & Coco Duivenvoorde

How can we rethink the social and environmental impact of design weeks on their host cities? Nieuwe Instituut and Milan-based cultural organisation cheFare present Redesigning Design Weeks: a multi-year residency programme that invites designers to critically look at the impact of design weeks — social, environmental and cultural — on the cities where they take place. During Milan Design Week in April, we are kicking off the programme with CIVICITY. Curated by The Hague studio Collective Works, this first edition invites designers-in-residence Pete Fung and method studio to immerse themselves in Milan’s urban, social, environmental and cultural ecosystems over the course of two months. Journalist Nuria Ribas Costa will document the project, offering critical reflections and future scenarios. On 9 April, during the Design Week, join us for the launch of CIVICITY at Alcova, at Villa Bagatti Valsecchi in Milan. Designers-in-residence Pete Fung and Studio-Method will present the initial findings of their ongoing residencies in Chiaravalle and Quartiere Adriano. This free event will also bring together local partners, experts and international guests for a discussion moderated by Angela Rui. Last week Nieuweinstituut and NAi Booksellers organized a new edition of the Graphic Design Fair. Established and emerging graphic designers took visitors through their creative process. The day was filled with workshops, presentations, and browsing through a wide range of unique designs, both analogue and digital. Two- and three-dimensional works were also available to buy. Thank you all for joining! This year’s theme was ‘growth’. Everything revolved around what graphic designers and makers need to grow and flourish professionally –whether it’s pruning your portfolio, tending your garden of ideas or planting seeds for future projects and collaborations. 🌱

Join us at Monday 3rd of March during the kick-off of the BK Feminist Week at TU Delft. Together with BK TU Delft and Urbanistas, Nieuwe Instituut organises the Monday programme on past, present and future networks of feminists around academia. After introducing the week's programme, Catherine Koekoek will moderate talks by BK feminists from different generations, setting the stage for the workshop in the afternoon. During the afternoon workshop we start generating a collective memory through mapping a timeline. Not only on names and achievements at BK but also about hidden and invisible stories. Through sharing experiences, the week aims to create space for inspiration, empowerment and change. What does feminism mean to you? The programme will take place 9:30 – 17:00, Berlage Room (Bouwkunde Faculty, Julianalaan 134, 2628 BL Delft). Sign up via this link: https://lnkd.in/efTvqT4r Coinciding with International Women's Day, BK Feminist Week (3 March – 7 March) features activities, discussions, and walks on campus from feminist perspectives, allowing us to position ourselves and learn from each other. We're building a present where our history shapes us and gives us the energy to build a network of care as a base for a feminist future in the faculty of TU Delft. Nieuwe Instituut presents SIDELINED: A Space to Rethink Togetherness, the official Dutch contribution to the 19th International Architecture Exhibition — Fondazione La Biennale di Venezia! Developed in collaboration with social designer Gabriel Fontana and curator Amanda Pinatih, the presentation in the Rietveld Pavilion in the Biennale’s Giardini reimagines the sports bar to question how architecture shapes social dynamics. How can architecture resist exclusionary social norms to create spaces that nurture different ways of coexisting in everyday life? SIDELINED explores this question by presenting an alternative sports bar that continues designer Gabriel Fontana’s investigation of social dynamics through the lens of sport. By subverting traditional norms and suggesting deviations, the Dutch Pavilion strives to change the rules of the game. In the space, designed by Koos Breen and Jeannette Slütter, visitors are encouraged to participate by playing a game or watching others play, and to observe how their relationship to familiar spaces of architecture might shift. The approximately 300,000 photographic prints in the National Collection for Dutch Architecture and Urban Planning form a diverse collection, both in terms of content and in terms of materials and condition. As part of the Photo Project, all the photo prints are being individually registered, conserved and digitised. Based on their physical condition, a pre-selection will also be made of those prints that require restoration, either in the future or in the short term. 📲 Learn more about Disclosing Architecture: 18 Stories of Heritage and Innovation via this link: https://lnkd.in/eaPG79hS
