Nyrstar’s highly flexible and fully electrified Zinc operations were front and center earlier this week at two leading Energy events where Nyrstar’s Global Category Manager Energy Philip Eyckmans shared Nyrstar’s ambitions and challenges around grid tariffs and congestion management. On Monday, Philip joined a high level panel discussion at the Dutch Energeia Energy Day (https://lnkd.in/e7BuUPGS) to discuss grid tariffs with Hans-Peter Oskam of Netbeheer Nederland, Manon Leijten of the The Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets and Antoinette Sol of Tata Steel Nederland. 👉 Nyrstar agrees that – in order to enable further electrification and decarbonization of our economy and society at large – significant investments in the grid are much needed. 👉 But high grid tariffs stand in the way of that same electrification as they negatively impact companies’ ability to invest, with the biggest impact on frontrunners in electrification such as Nyrstar. 👉 Philip called on the panelists and audience to consider ways to reduce and/or more evenly distribute grid costs e.g. by offering appropriate incentives for flexibility and seeking alternatives to finance the transition so that electrification pays off and electro-intensive companies can remain competitive. On Tuesday, Philip participated in two panel sessions at the Management Productions ENERGIZED-Netcongestion congress (https://lnkd.in/ehvNPwJy Rotterdam. In the morning session he contributed to a discussion with Olof van der Gaag of Nederlandse Vereniging Duurzame Energie (NVDE), Ronald Huikeshoven of AM Gebiedsontwikkeling / NEPROM, and Renz Bassant of DHL eCommerce Nederland on the challenges and opportunities for the built environment, mobility and industry. In the afternoon, the focus was solely on the (energy intensive) industry, with a panel discussion on grid congestion with Jeroen Buunk of BlueTerra Energy Experts, Andre Bosman of Uniper Benelux, Peter van Asperen of PwC Nederland and Martin Martens of Stedin. 👉 Everyone agreed that grid congestion is an urgent problem. 👉 Although by no means all industrial processes can be made flexible, there is certainly a lot of potential in certain industries already to contribute to reducing grid congestion. 👉 It is urgently needed to work with those companies which have significant potential now, to pave the way for others to follow. Through initiatives such as its Virtual Battery (https://lnkd.in/eBgs5G7M) Nyrstar looks forward to continue to support future-oriented activities to expand electrification, enable flexible power purchase, reduce grid congestion and further domestic production of critical minerals and metals, essential for the green transition. #events #seminars #electricity #flexible #grid #congestionmanagement #electrolysis #workingtogether #tariffs #offtake #electrification #criticalminerals

#VEMW #Voorzitter #bezoek #transitie #groenegroei #verduurzaming #energie #autonomie #zink #kritiekemineralen #overheid #samenwerking

At Nyrstar, we remain committed to safety and continue to work together towards our zero harm goal as a united team. We are proud to share that the Immel Zinc Mine, part of the Nyrstar East Tennessee Mines in the United States, has just reached a significant safety milestone: two years without a lost time injury (LTI). This achievement follows a recent accomplishment at Nyrstar Budel (The Netherlands), where the team secured one year without any LTI’s. A huge shout out to all our Nyrstar colleagues for their dedicated efforts to work efficiently and safely. Your health and well-being are at the heart of our operations. #SafetyFirst #SafetyCulture #Zinc #Sustainability #TowardsZero

Earlier this week Nyrstar participated in a breakfast briefing with Dutch Members of Parliament as well as a number of key associations and materials companies, which have formed the Dutch ‘Circular Critical Raw Materials’ partnership. The breakfast, which took place at the Delft University of Technology | Campus The Hague, was organized in the run-up to a parliamentary debate on Economic Security and Strategic Autonomy, scheduled for 7 November. The members of the Circular and Critical Raw Materials partnership - Nyrstar included with its opportunities in Zinc related critical minerals such as Gallium and Germanium - provided an update on the innovation, technology, ambitions and challenges for critical materials production in The Netherlands as well as the impact on Dutch society at large. What do we make the products of the future from, and how do we ensure that we can continue to produce them in the future decreasing dependence on foreign and/or non-European powers? This is a challenge which is at least as comprehensive and complex as the energy transition. It requires a fresh look at which materials are needed, but also how to best extract, design and produce innovative products, and recover the materials through efficient recycling. These topics were further ellaborated by Benjamin Sprecher (Delft University of Technology), John-Alan Pascoe (Delft University of Technology) and Luc Kikkert (TNO) with moderation by Jacqueline Vaessen (ChemistryNL). A big thank you to Dutch MP's and Political Assistants Dennis Ram, Danielle Hirsch, Eric van der Burg, Diederik Diekhuis as well as our partners ChemistryNL, VNCI, Materials innovation institute M2i, TNO, Invest-NL, University of Amsterdam, Shell, Delft University of Technology, Leiden University, Port of Rotterdam, University of Twente, Nobian and all other members of the ‘Circular Critical Raw Materials’ partnership for making this such a valuable exchange.

Nyrstar's products help make the Earth a more sustainable place to live, and even reach for the stars. 🌑🚀 Our black sand, a by-product of Nyrstar's alkaline battery recycling process in Port Pirie - plays a crucial role in the manufacture of eco-friendly cement in South Australia. 🔋 ♻ It also served a celestial purpose recently, by contributing to research work at the Andy Thomas Space Centre, University of Adelaide. Their 'EXTERRES' Lab needed a material that could replicate the moon's dusty surface for experiments with cameras used on orbiting satellites or on lunar rovers. They found the perfect match in our black sand. Mixed with crusher dust, it provided the ideal texture and light-absorbing qualities without the risks posed by traditional coal dust. We are over the moon to see our by-product contributing to innovation in space! 🌙 #Sustainability #Innovation #Recycling

Last week, the Nyrstar Budel team hosted Bart Groothuis, Member of European Parliament for VVD / Renew Europe, to explore Nyrstar’s European challenges and opportunities. Bart was hosted by Nyrstar’s Guido Janssen, Henk Leendertse and Jasper van Zon. Key points included the importance of maintaining and further developing highly sustainable and already fully electrified producers of industrial- and critical minerals and metals such as Nyrstar Budel to help achieve Europe’s competitiveness- and green ambitions. Concerns were raised in particular around the unequal level playing field between the Netherlands and other European member states in the context of energy costs and economic and market pressures. The Nyrstar team provided a full overview of Nyrstar’s global activities, with a special focus on our European ambitions around flexible industrial electricity offtake – also known as the Nyrstar Virtual Battery project (more here https://lnkd.in/eUvuyis4 ) – and our efforts to develop additional critical minerals and metals such as Germanium and Gallium. It was a great pleasure to host Bart Groothuis and exchange views in such a constructive way, demonstrating what all of us at the Nyrstar team do every day to support Europe in becoming more self sufficient for our critical raw materials needs. #visit #europeanparliament #EU #reneweurope #VVD #criticalminerals #politics #dialogue #engagement #greenfuture #levelplayingfield #bartgroothuis #competition #energy #electricity #competititiveness
