De Vlaamse Bond Beter Leefmilieu en Nyrstar Belgium vonden elkaar eerder deze week in een constructieve dialoog op het kantoor van BBL te Brussel, waar vertegenwoordigers van beide organisaties op een open en constructieve manier van gedachten wisselden over de verschillende uitdagingen en kansen in de klimaat-en milieutransitie alsmede het industriebeleid. Thema's die passeerden en voor iedereen belangrijk zijn: ✔ flexibiliteit van het energiesysteem, ✔ batterij- en windparken, ✔ waterkwaliteit, ✔ kritieke mineralen- en metalentransitie, ✔ financiering van de transitie ✔ en Europees, Belgisch en Vlaams regeerbeleid. Onderwerpen waar BBL als koepelorganisatie van de Vlaamse natuur- en milieuorganisaties en Nyrstar als verregaand verduurzaamd en geëlektrificeerd producent van essentiële mineralen en metalen beiden hun eigen visie maar ook veel gedeelde doelen over hebben. Belangrijk is om de dialoog met alle stakeholders te houden en om samen de uitdagingen aan te gaan, iets wat beide partijen ook graag in de toekomst verder voort willen zetten. Last week, the Nyrstar Budel team hosted Bart Groothuis, Member of European Parliament for VVD / Renew Europe, to explore Nyrstar’s European challenges and opportunities. Bart was hosted by Nyrstar’s Guido Janssen, Henk Leendertse and Jasper van Zon. Key points included the importance of maintaining and further developing highly sustainable and already fully electrified producers of industrial- and critical minerals and metals such as Nyrstar Budel to help achieve Europe’s competitiveness- and green ambitions. Concerns were raised in particular around the unequal level playing field between the Netherlands and other European member states in the context of energy costs and economic and market pressures. The Nyrstar team provided a full overview of Nyrstar’s global activities, with a special focus on our European ambitions around flexible industrial electricity offtake – also known as the Nyrstar Virtual Battery project (more here https://lnkd.in/eUvuyis4 ) – and our efforts to develop additional critical minerals and metals such as Germanium and Gallium. Nyrstar is sending its love and support to the communities in the US, affected by Hurricane Helene. The Nyrstar East Tennessee Mine Rescue Team, a volunteer group of miners proficient in advanced rescue operations, has been actively engaged in disaster response in Unicoi County, Tennessee, following the devastation brought by Hurricane Helene.   In response to a statewide call for assistance, the Mine Rescue Team, affiliated with the Tennessee Association of Rescue Squads, dispatched a contingent of seven skilled mine workers. Nyrstar HSEC Manager Brian Millington, said the team reached the affected area on Monday and has been tirelessly working to comb through the rubble, contribute to recovery initiatives, and navigate widespread power disruptions caused by the hurricane's forceful winds. Nyrstar's East Tennessee Mining operations are also contributing resources and providing food to organizations leading disaster relief operations.   Additionally, Nyrstar Clarksville’s Process Manager, Terry Dabbs, joined the Nyrstar East Tennessee Mines team helping those affected by the storm. Terry, and fellow members of the Cumberland K9 Search & Recovery Team responded to a request for assistance by the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency.   Nyrstar East Tennessee Mine General Manager, Mathew Harding said, “we are part of this community. When your neighbor is in trouble, you jump in and help. In recognition of World Rivers Day, 10 of our Hobart team members were yesterday joined by volunteers from Incat Tasmania and GLENORCHY CITY COUNCIL for a clean-up event along the Prince of Wales foreshore, organised by the Derwent Estuary Program.   Around 40 bags of rubbish were collected as a timely reminder to us all to discard of plastics and other wastes responsibly.   Thank you to Joel Manser, James Cherry, Tom Nutting, Alex Lovibond, Grant Pennicott, Calen Gadd, Georgia Thomas, Colin Morrison, Cameron Crawford and Thomas Wear for representing Nyrstar on a sunny day out to help our Clean Up Australia Ltd efforts for the betterment of the environment. #WorldRiversDay #Environment #Hobart

Last week, Nyrstar was invited to attend StudyAdelaide's first Graduates Career Expo, for over 150 international students residing in South Australia. Our Global Recruitment Manager, Jason Barrington, spoke on the event panel about the opportunities that lie within the #Resources sector in regional cities such as Port Pirie, and what a summer placement position looks like with Nyrstar. Jason was joined at the event by Kate Reade - a past participant of our summer placement program, as well as Rahul Sharma and Luke Sale. N-VA Vlaams parlementslid Koen Dillen en partijgenoten Greet Van Tiggelen en Siebe Van Hout brachten onlangs een bezoek aan Nyrstar in Balen. Samen met Steven Vaelen, Philip Eyckmans en Jasper van Zon bespraken ze de ambities en uitdagingen van Nyrstar met betrekking tot verdere verduurzaming en flexibilisering van de - reeds volledig geëlektrificeerde - productie op de site in Balen. In deze context werden ook de mogelijkheden besproken op het gebied van kritieke mineralen en metalen die al aanwezig zijn in de zinkertsen die door Nyrstar worden verwerkt. Ambities waardoor de bijdrage van Nyrstar aan de groene transitie, hightech en strategische onafhankelijkheid van België nog verder wordt versterkt. Aangezien de drie leden van de N-VA-delegatie allemaal rechtstreeks uit de regio komen (Balen en Mol), werd er ook speciale aandacht besteed aan de jarenlange relatie van Nyrstar Balen met de lokale omgeving en haar zorg voor veiligheid, gezondheid en milieu. Tom Ongena, Vlaams parlementslid Open Vld, bracht gisteren een bezoek aan Nyrstar's zinksmelter in Balen, België, in het kader van de Zomerstages georganiseerd door Voka - Kamer van Koophandel Mechelen-Kempen. Tijdens een rondleiding over de fabriekssite, gaf Steven Vaelen uitleg over het zinkproductieproces, Nyrstar's duurzaamheidsinitiatieven en de belangrijke rol die Nyrstar -als producent van kritieke en strategische mineralen en metalen- speelt in de energietransitie. Around 40 rising stars at Nyrstar Hobart's Zinc Works were recently put through their paces developing their leadership skills while completing the onsite Nyrstar Leadership Program. Run by experts from the Professional and Continuing Education at the University of Adelaide’s (PACE) team, the four-day program had our participating personnel polishing up on areas including strategy and decision-making, performance management fundamentals, leading high performing teams, and having effective leadership conversations.
