Working together for a world free of chemical weapons
Over ons
As the implementing body for the Chemical Weapons Convention, the OPCW, with its 193 Member States, oversees the global endeavour to permanently eliminate chemical weapons. Since the Convention’s entry into force in 1997, it is the most successful disarmament treaty eliminating an entire class of weapons of mass destruction. 100% percent of all chemical weapon stockpiles declared by possessor States have been destroyed under OPCW verification. For its extensive efforts in eliminating chemical weapons, the OPCW received the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize.

📆 #OnThisDay in 1992 the #ChemicalWeaponsConvention was adopted by the Conference on Disarmament. It was the culmination of dedicated #disarmament efforts spanning nearly the entire 20th century. Past efforts 🔙 The earliest initiatives to prohibit the use of poisonous weapons were the St. Petersburg Declaration in 1868 and The Hague Declaration in 1899. The objectives of these, however, remained unfulfilled. #ChemicalWeapons were used on a massive scale during the First World War. That tragic experience led to adoption of the Geneva Protocol in 1925. Building on the Geneva Protocol ⚠ While prohibiting the use of chemical weapons, the Geneva Protocol did not prohibit their production, development, or stockpiling. Unfortunately countries amassed huge quantities of chemical weapons, and these weapons continued to be used over the coming decades. Turning point 📄 After 12 years of negotiations, the CWC was adopted by the #ConferenceOnDisarmament in 1992. The CWC sets out the obligations of countries to ensure that chemical weapons are eliminated and never re-emerge. The Convention is comprehensive and non-discriminatory, prohibiting the development, production, stockpiling, transfer, and use of chemical weapons by States Parties, under conditions of strict international verification.
