💥 Paebbl just crossed an important milestone with their first ton of CO2 mineralised! 💥   🔦 Today, I feature Paebbl, a Dutch-Scandinavian carbon dioxide removal (#CDR) company permanently storing captured CO2 in zero-carbon or carbon-negative raw materials. How does Paebbl operate?   🌬️ Paebbl takes captured CO2 (from DAC or BioCCS) and combines it with water and ground silicate rocks (first mineral: olivine) in a proprietary mineralisation process that accelerates the same processes which occurs in nature over centuries.   🪨 This mineralisation yields a decarbonised raw material with applications in essential industries, some of which have significant CO2 emissions, such as concrete, polymers, paper, and chemicals.   🏭 Paebbl’s initial focus is on construction materials with their first carbon-storing reactive fillers and supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) entering the market by 2025. Paebbl is already working with early adopter customers who have ambitious decarbonisation roadmaps.   What is Paebbl’s carbon removal strategy?   📜 The permanent storage of CO2 is Paebbl’s long-term CDR strategy, established through their commitment to applications with a predicted permanence of 1,000 years. In addition, the use of Paebbl’s materials displace traditional materials and additional CO2 is avoided.   🔍  In 1m3 of concrete some 150kg of CO2 can be avoided and 50kg CO2 permanently stored through partial replacement of ordinary cement by Paebbl's carbon-storing reactive filler. Paebbl's next scale-up step is a demo plant with a CO2 capacity of 0.4-1ktpa (launch 2025), after which Paebbl will continue scaling-up to a FOAK commercial plant by 2028. By 2031, Paebbl plans to reach megaton scale capacity of decarbonised materials for the built environment.   🔒 Paebbl creates negatively embodied carbon, verified and permanently sequestered with minimal energy use. ❓ Innovations such as these really excite me, and it looks like there is a lot more to come from Paebbl – what do you think of the future of CO2-stored products?   📣 Shoutout to Marta Sjögren, Andreas Saari, Pol Knops and the rest of the Paebbl team.

Big News: 🎉 We've removed our first ton of CO2! 🎉 At Paebbl, we intend to make a big dent against global warming by restoring the planet's carbon balance by 1 billion tons of CO2 per annum by 2050. We turn CO2 into CO3, transforming carbon from a gaseous, high-energy state (CO2) to a solid, low-energy state (CO3) carbonate (aka rock powder). This solid carbonate is then inset into decarbonizing the built environment. Today we are thrilled to announce that we’ve reached a major milestone: we have mineralised our first ton of CO2 at our pilot facility, and turned it into decarbonised raw materials for use in the built environment. We’re moving fast, but our journey is barely a humbling 0.0000001% complete. Turning carbon dioxide into carbonate rock is nothing new, it is what happens in nature when rain hits rock and forms a different kind of rock, carbonate. We just speed up the process a million times or so. We make a lot of rock powder, about three tons of rock powder for every ton of carbon dioxide we re-store. With our close partners, we put that rock powder to good use, replacing construction materials that emit CO2. Replacing other materials with our re-stored carbon multiplies our impact. This year,  Paebbl intends to start production from our continuous demo plant, growing capacity 10x from where we are today. That will be our third scale-up step in 18 months. But is it fast enough? The challenge ahead of us (for Paebbl, the construction industry, and for the 🌍) is immense. We are late as a society to step up to face climate change. Very late. So we need more brilliant, planet-aligned, resilient people to join the thirty of us Paebblers as soon as possible. Learn about current vacancies here, or click "connect" if you dont find something that fits your profile but where you think your skills can be valuable: https://lnkd.in/dRx6VK9Z 🙏 Thankful for the support of our investors and partners along this journey: 2050, Pale blue dot, The Grantham Foundation for the Protection of the Environment, Marc von Keitz, Marie Ekeland, Jane Walerud, Bengt Walerud, Hampus Jakobsson, David Helgason, Illusian Family Office, Benjamin Ratz, Lawrence Barclay, Lea Bajc, Anna Wedar, First Fellow Partners, Moaffak Ahmed, VOYAGERS.io, David Rowan, Jeremy Yap, and many more.

"We are the first generation to feel the effect of climate change and the last generation who can do something about it.” - Barack Obama - No, we didn’t have the former president of the United State at our panel, but we sure echoed his sentiment at #WEC today! Tipping our hats to Jacqueline van den Ende , the stellar CEO at Carbon Equity, who masterfully steered today’s discussion towards scaling business models in the energy sector from her perspective. From the scale-up side, Wouter Draijer⚡ of SolarMente shone as brightly as the sun 🌞, highlighting how we can harness the power of existing energy more effectively. Mark Meldrum from Rondo Energy threw another brick in the wall of traditional thinking with his take on low-cost, zero-emission industrial heat and power 🔋. And let’s not overlook Arnold Choi from Paebbl, mixing things up in the construction industry, proposing more concrete solutions to lower CO2 emissions 🚧. Yes, more concrete! Join us as we pave the way for a greener tomorrow. Let’s innovate, impact, and inspire! #ClimateChange #Innovation #Sustainability #FutureIsNow
